When my dad asked me to go shoe shopping with him I thought we were going to the mall. Much to my suprise we ended up in Carmel at a building that he told me used to be a place where people would go to get hamburgers. After watching my dad try on a few pairs of shoes, while listening to my ipod, he asked me if I would like to try on some Ugg boots. I'm a teenager so of course I didn't say no. After trying several styles my Dad told me to pick my favorites. I hope he ask me to go there again sometime.

Stout's has beening selling footwear at 318 Mass Ave since 1886. It is one of the oldest stores in Indiana and the oldest shoe store in the U.S.A. But the selection is any thing but old. They have lots of great brands Keen, Ugg, Merrill, and New Balance to name a few. While you are there check out the one of a kind basket and pully system. It send the shoes across the ceiling. Very cool!

Stout's is one of my favorite stores. The staff is personable, the
ambiance nostalgic, and the shoe selection very high quality. I've had
great service and no trouble returning a pair of shoes that pinched -- of
course I didn't wear them outside so they were returned as good as new.

I have shopped at Stouts several times but never again. Suggestive selling is one thing but when it is to the point of obnoxious then show me the door. It was the worst experience I have had in a full service retail establishment ever. There is no reason left for me not to shop on the internet. I am all for supporting local independent businesses (even at extra expense) but not after this experience.

I have shopped at Stout's shoes for many years and have had no problems with their service...until now. Three weeks ago, I purchased a pair of Clarks Twill sandals. The second time that I wore the shoes, I noticed an annoying swishing sound every time I stepped down on my right shoe. It sounded as thought there was an air pocket in the sole of the shoe. I am a teacher and stand on my feet all day, so the swishing was quite irritating. I called Stout's to see if I could exchange my shoes for another pair. They agreed, but did not have my size in stock. They ordered another pair for me from the manufacturer. After 1 1/2 weeks of waiting, they still had not received my shoes from the manufacturer. I called Stout's and they said that my shoes were on the way. After 2 1/2 weeks, I returned to Stout's (evening of May 26, 2006) to inquire about the hold up. The manager said that the manufacturer had sold out of my shoes, and they were not going to get anymore in. I asked for a refund, but Stout's manager refused. The manager was not accomodating or personable. Despite the defect, she gave me the option of an in-store credit or exchange. Since I was not interested in purchasing any other shoes, these options were not acceptable to me. In the end, I was forced to accept the in-store credit. I will NOT be doing business with Stout's shoes again.

The downtown location of Stout's Shoes is located on Mass Ave. You can use street parking and enter through the front door, but it is more convenient to use the back entrance, and park on the small lot on Delaware (just north of New York St). The selection of shoes is very good, and the staff always is helpful. There is an entertaining talking parrot usually sitting outside of the store on warm days.
