My husband spent his high school years and Japan -- and says that this is the most authentic Japanese in Indianapolis (and we've tried most of them). The Udon and tempura are delicious. The prices are quite a bit higher than other good Japanese places in town, though (like Ocean World). It's always packed on the weekend, so a reservation is a must.

Sakura has been around for a long time.. I have been going there for well over 10 years... long before all these other pricey sushi joints started moving in. The service is excellent, the place is always crowded -- which speaks for the great food at a great price. Not a sushi fan myself.. the chicken teriyaki is great -- large quantity as well...
Oh, and if you're there for lunch, check out the sakura grocery around the corner -- there you can buy fresh ingredients to try your own japanese cooking skills!

I've been to other sushi places in Indy, but I always return to Sakura. I always order their soft-shell crab rolls, which is a chopped soft shell crab in a tempura batter, in a slightly spicy mayonnaise. Delicious!
Their barbecued eel (unagi) is tender and flavorful. And I have never ordered anything that didn't taste completely fresh. Some may complain about the slow service, but why be in a hurry when there's delicious food to enjoy? I have always found the waitstaff to be attentive and prompt enough.

I have never had bad sushi at Sakura. Their sushi is always fresh and tasty. All of the rolls are excellent - especially the soft shell crab, and the Hoosier Roll. The service can be a bit slow, and they are ALWAYS busy, but if you don't have time to wait, you can always do takeout. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!! Sushi for lunch for me.
