In my 42 years of life I have always had problems with my vision. Not anymore. Dr. Mapes has achieved what no other eye doctor has ever been able to do for me. . .I can see perfectly! Seriously, I've always been told my eyes were not correctable to 20/20. Well, Dr Mapes has me seeing 20/15 for the first time in my life. I could not be happier. I purchased contact lenses (bifocals) and progressive bifocal eyeglasses. Not only do I see perfectly - I look and feel great in my new glasses and contacts. I only wish I would have found Spectacles years ago. After years of frustration I am finally happy. Dr. Mapes and his staff are the best. Thank you! Pros: great eye doctor, great eyewear Cons: limited parking in the evening hours due to the restaurants surrounding his office

I've been a patient of Dr Mapes for 8 years. I can not EVER imagine going to any other doctor in Houston. He is an incredible guy, very knowledgeagle, and has an awesome personality. I'm always excited to go to his office each year to get new glasses because his eyewear is amazing, unique and always gets me tons of compliments. Yes, his office is more expensive than the boring chain stores, but well worth it! Their service, quality of frames, and customer service is worth any price. I've been informed I may be transferred out of state but, guess what, I will ALWAYS come back to Spectacles for my eye care and eyewear. Nothing beats Spectacles and Dr. Mapes. Pros: unique eyewear, great glasses, great service, wonderful experience each visit Cons: not open on Sunday - but I guess they deserve one day off a week = LOL

got prescription and glasses there. glasses were at least twice going rate anywhere else and DID NOT WORK. I brought them back. They acted like it must be my hang up, getting used to bifocals. I'd already had experienced with bifocals, and had already tried to get used to their glasses for several weeks. I called again, and they said it was my problem and I was out $1000. I then went to a diff't doctor, got a great prescription and went to the mall to pick out frame. The glasses and prescription worked immediately and were great. Clearly, how they assessed my eye sight and how they fitted me for lens was inferior, expensive and their attitude was awful. The staff was very cavelier about the whole thing. I can't say enough bad about this experience. Pros: nothing. had reputation of having cool glasses Cons: nothing about this place is good. They are expensive and give poor exams and poor service

I recently purchased a pair of eyeglasses from Spectacles on Montrose. I liked the service and designer frames. Unfortunately they have limited selection of frames in my size (I'm tall), so the glasses I wound up going with don't look very good on me ... they look like safety glasses, and they were quite expensive at $725. Although the frames don't look good, I like the quality of the glasses (very clear, easy to see/read with). It's a great store if you are looking for frames that look very unusual and care about how well your eyeglasses are made. They have very convenient hours (open until 8pm) and are in a very convenient location. I'm going with a below average rating because most of the comments I received about my glasses have been negative in terms of appearance and the glasses cost about twice as much as the last eyeglasses I purchased elsewhere. I do like how the eyeglasses perform in terms of how well I see with them. Pros: Very convenient hours, location, friendly, professional staff, high quality frames Cons: Most people have made negative comments about the appearance of my $700 glasses

I read all the reviews before I booked my appointment. . . Spectacles is even better than I expected. Starting off. . .Dr Mapes gave me the best eye exam I have ever had. He's very relaxed, not rushed, and I actually enjoyed the exam. I ususally worry that I screwed up somehow. . .not this time. Dr. Mapes (he introduced himself as Evan. . .no "doctor complex") was awesome! My new contact lenses are the best vision I have ever had with contacts - AND - he had them in his office so I could wear them when I left. Thanks! Then the fun part -- I got to choose my glasses. I HAD FUN looking at the many, many unique frames. Yes - I had fun! Definately not a typical optical. Everything I looked at was unique. . .something no one else will have! I picked glasses and sunglasses. I got them BOTH in 6 days. I LOOK GREAT! at least that is what everyone is telling me! I didn't realize how much of a difference a good set of glasses can affect me. My boss even noticed! I feel and look great. My vision is perfect. I have my 10 year reunion this summer and I know I will be looking my best. . . thanks to Spectacles. They have my business forever. I have an eye condition called kerataconus that reqires me to wear hard contact lenses. These lenses have to be refitted every few years as my vision changes (i.e., gets worse). During a visit to a contact lense fitter in the Texas Medical Center, I was told that while my left eye could be refitted with a lense that would correct for the loss of vision my right eye was too far gone and changing my contact prescription in that eye would make no difference. I would have to a have a cornea transplant in that eye to make my vision better. A few months latter after accidentally crushing one contact lense, I visited Dr. Mapes office located , Spectacles on Montrose (located very close to my work) to have my contact lense replaced. Upon my visited Dr. Mapes examined (a procedure that usually requires all kinds of special gadgetry - so I've been told) my eyes on the spot, without an appointment. He then told me that I was far from needing the surgery I was told I would need. He explained that he would order my contacts and they would be back in a few days. He even gave me a temporary contact to wear in the interim to keep my cornea stable. Of course, I was skeptical having been told by the "experts" (or so I thought) that surgery was my only option for vision improvement. I was also skeptical, because of the doctor's relaxed nature. The contacts arrived after a brief delay. I see better than I ever have in my ENTIRE life - in BOTH eyes!!!! It is amazing! Do not be put off by the relaxed nature of the doctor (actually, it is kind of refreshing). He is wonderful and while the shop may be a bit pricey, great vision is worth it - more than worth it. By the way, he also has some really great frames. Stylish, colorful, MODERN!!! - M.
