Leonards is definitely a local favorite! Their malasadas are no doubt the best on the island, especially their custard filled ones. When its nice and warm, it's so delicious.
Leonards has recently put up a nice new sign and it looks pretty cool. It has a retro look to it. Inside, however, it is still a little run down. For the number of clients they get, I assume they have enough money to renovate the whole bakery but I think they want to keep the homey look.

This is one of the top rated restaurants in Hawaii. Alan Wong makes many local dishes with a lot of vegetables which I like. He is well known in the islands for his Pacific Rim cuisine. This is a superb restaurant that is located away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Thumbs up!

Drive, walk, run, whatever you need to do to get to this place for donut lovers! Heck, you do not even have to be a fan of pastries to try their heavenly tasting malasadas. Krispy Kreme? Who are they? Leonard's can be spotted as you drive along Kapahulu--you can't miss their 1950's sign as you round the corner. Parking is very limited and people will park and try to double park just to eat at Leonard's. We even saw someone take a cab to this place with the meter running while they stood in line to buy a malasada. You can order these fresh, soft, mouth watering delectables with either their filling of the month (ie. mango creme, banana creme) or you can order their originals. Service is excellent and these freshly made pastries come out fast and hot.
Pros: Malasadas
Cons: Parking

Like previous reviews have mentioned, this is one of the most popular place to go for the locals and informed travelers! Nothing compares. Large portion, absolutely local authentic taste and it's just located in this area that you'd enjoy sitting and share a meal after the beach or just chill out with friends. If you are tired of the touristy stuff in Waikiki, I recommend strongly to stop by here and grab lunch. This is what the locals do, and you should do it also.

Recently stayed in Oahu and found this place to be the bearer of the grandest Mai Tais.
Located in the rear of the one of the swankiest hotels in all of Oahu (Halekulani).
For the most part most of the restaurants have the same layout there on the beach, however H w/o K has the best delivery of all!
Every night at sunset they offer live music out under a century-old Kiawe tree overlooking the ocean with service which cannot be beat.
The now $8 Mai-Tais seem like a bargain.
Get there early.. It fills up fast!

Lived in Hawaii and was there when Alan Wong's opened. It is without a doubt the best of the best. There are so many things that we liked about the restaurant. Its out of the way place, its definitely different, its upstairs in a building that you would not think a restaurant is in. When you make your reservations they take your name and when you are seated the person who seats you and your waiter from then on uses your name. its like you have been coming there forever. The Manager stops by and ask how things are going. There is usually a "special treat" from Alan, maybe its just a juice drink, or a small appetizer, and that is also followed up by a dessert piece of something at the end. The rolls are delicious, finish one, and the roll boy is there again; the water glass is never empty. My favorite is when the person brings you meal and explains everything on it, rather than some places that when someone brings you the plate they have to ask you what you ordered. The waiters don't start as waiters, they start as the bus boys and work their way up, the learn how to be a waiter and all the different kinds of food that are prepared. When you go to AW's you are treated as someone who has been coming for years, even if it is you first trip there. Yes it crowded, most great restaurants are. And the awards won by AW is overwhelming. And the best part is that AW is usually there. There are some restaurants that the owner, top chef are rarely there.
Pros: Top food, top service, top restaurant.
Cons: Hard to get reservations

By far, the most expernsive and the best meal of our tip. You choose if you want 3, 4 or 5 course meals. You begin with a glass of Champagne (Lanson) and a tidbit (we had a small popover filled with a salmon moose.) We had an assortment of appetizers ($$ extra). My wife had the crispy skinned Onaga while I had the bouillabase. For dessert we had a banana souffle. Each and every dish was spot on. Worth every penny. For the 2 of us with a bottle of wine the bill was over $390 with tip) I only wish the wine list had more Alsatian wines.
Pros: Superb Food, Great View
Cons: Splurge Prices; Men Need Coat or Long Sleeve Shirt

We were on vacation and were craving some spicy Indian food. We tried Cafe Maharani and found that the food was just great. The naans and curry were fresh. The restaurant is small and usually gets crowded, I would recommend grabbing a bottle of wine from the Star Market across the street and having a glass while waiting for a table. The food is worth the wait!
Pros: Great food
Cons: Slightly slow service when busy, but the staff is great!

Compadre's has a good atmosphere and good service. As for mexican food on the Island, it is as good as you are going to get. There is a good lanai that over looks Ala Moana Beach Park. This makes for a great place to lunch or have a nice dinner. Taco Tuesday is dollar taco's and great drink specials and a happening crowd to boot. I
