We went on a Sunday evening. The menu offered so much that it took we first-timers a few minutes to decide what we were going to choose. They offer seafood, pasta, meat, sashimi, and a very broad selection of alcohol (a must when we eat out, especially when it comes to Japanese food). We are sashimi freaks and have had our range of terrible and very good sashimi. Sansei fell on the better end. Pricewise it is very affordable. They had a few *people's favorites* but having eaten everything there is to eat we opted for food that fit our palates for the evening. Again, all good. And the wine was good too. The service... we got there kind of late so they only had three servers (not busy), but it was decent. The food came out in a timely manner, and they never seemed to be in a rush to get us out so they could close. They have daily specials and happy hour discounts, which I'm sure makes for an excellent value. Unfortunately, Sunday nights didn't fall under that category. Still, it was worth the full price. You need to try it once. Oh, and let's not forget that it's right across the beach so you can walk off your full belly in Waikiki! Edited: We went again... Their foie gras is pretty good, but not perfect. When I write that I'm not coming from the perspective of expecting perfection, it was a little salty and the time before that it was a little cold already, not piping hot like we were accustomed to from Rokkaku. Their uni was pretty good, as was their salmon and hamachi was pretty all right. He had the ribeye and prawns, asked for it medium rare and got it that way, but the flavor was off (lacking). I had the prawn salad, which was pretty decent but their sell isn't for weird, fusion-type, exotic foods but more along the lines of normal, for lack of a better word... like your safe Gyotakus (I hate to keep using that restaurant as a comparison but it works) as opp

With offerings including panko crusted ahi, numerous imaginative rolls, as well as traditional nigiri, Sansei, a Waikiki outpost of the Maui-based sushi/seafood creation by Dave "DK" Kodama, sets diners' expectations high. However, a dining room marred by canned Hawaiian musak, closely packed tables with plastic tops, and glaring lights quickly crushes any hopes of an enjoyable meal. In a horrible, Denny's-like atmosphere, the harried, inexperienced servers are prone to botching orders. They rush by tables so quickly that it is hard to get their attention to put in an additional order. Not to worry. Diners really won't want more of the fast food-quality fare anyway. Items intended to be crispy are soggy, selections arrive out of order or sometimes not at all, and dishes that should have been made fresh were obviously prepared ahead of time. At prices high even by Waikiki standards (dinner for 2 with drinks $150), Sansei disappoints all around. For this egregious abuse of diners sensabilities, someone should ensure Kodama sleeps with the fishes. Cons: Soggy fried dishes, poor service, inexperienced waitrons, Denny's-like atmosphere

I may be Asian, but I've never liked sushi. Raw things simply make me...squeemish. Sansei, recently relocated to the Waikiki Beach Marriott, however, makes "raw stuff" superb. The staff that greets is hardly friendly, but servers are affable and smily. With a blend of Asian and Hawaiian decor, Sansei offers an enormous menu of specialty sushi and entrees, including a judiciously spiced shichimi-crusted filet. Signature mango crab salad hand roll is served with a sprightly Thai chili vinaigrette and boosted further with a good hand of cilantro. It's smooth and smooth with a fantastically fresh seared 'ahi with sensual soy butter sauce pooled around. Shrimp dynamite, lightly battered and fried to a tantalizing crisp, is delicious topped off with smelt roe-garlic aioli. Even a simple local favorite like misoyaki butterfish is prepared beautifully. A true showstopper, however, is the ethereal Dungeness crab and black truffle ramen. I always feel obligated to order one of the spectacular desserts, whether it be a Granny Smith apple and caramel tart or tempura-fried ice cream. Food at Sansei is a far better deal than its sister restaurant D.K. Steak House next door. Pros: Wonderful, creative sushi and homey desserts Cons: Unreliable service

Ordered the shrimp cake (served with a creamy sauce and crunchy noodles), filet of beef, nalo greens salad served with an umeboshi dressing, dungeness crab ramen, rainbow roll, and a lilikoi cream pie. Parking is available next in the Marriott Hotel for $7 (valet) with validation. Pros: sushi and appetizers Cons: not a quiet restaurant

Slightly off the main strip in Waikiki, you can dodge the crazy and unexplainable lines of places like the Cheesecake Factory (why??) and go for some of the best sushi/seafood on the island here. You can order their omikasa (sp?) -- a series of their best dishes served in courses, and get really really full. Or you can simply get their sushi and other appetizers if you're not as hungry. Recommended dishes are their panko crusted ahi sashimi, and the mango and crab salad roll --they were delicious!

Check their website on this but there's an early bird special for people who live in Hawaii. You get their entire sushi bar half off if you stand in line for about a half hour and order in another half hour. You don't need to finish it within a certain amount of time, but you just need to order. I would say this is the best sushi place on the island. Plan to spend about forty dollars a person 20 for the early bird. Its good sushi and an awesome date place. I reccomend sitting at the sushi bar just because they get your order really quick and you get to see them make it in front of you. You don't have to wait for the staff to bring it to you. Definitely the place to go for a date, your date will love you, because its just good.

Sansei makes the absolute tastiest, most creative rolls I have ever tasted. Panko-crusted, seared ahi tuna with wasabi mayonaisse stands out as especially delicious. The place itself is nothing special and the service was fine, but nothing beats it for value. My girlfriend and I ordered the tasting menu for two which left us stuffed to the gills and only cost $60 total. Pros: rolls, inexpensive Cons: atmosphere, location
