Drive, walk, run, whatever you need to do to get to this place for donut lovers! Heck, you do not even have to be a fan of pastries to try their heavenly tasting malasadas. Krispy Kreme? Who are they? Leonard's can be spotted as you drive along Kapahulu--you can't miss their 1950's sign as you round the corner. Parking is very limited and people will park and try to double park just to eat at Leonard's. We even saw someone take a cab to this place with the meter running while they stood in line to buy a malasada. You can order these fresh, soft, mouth watering delectables with either their filling of the month (ie. mango creme, banana creme) or you can order their originals. Service is excellent and these freshly made pastries come out fast and hot.
Pros: Malasadas
Cons: Parking

Lived in Hawaii and was there when Alan Wong's opened. It is without a doubt the best of the best. There are so many things that we liked about the restaurant. Its out of the way place, its definitely different, its upstairs in a building that you would not think a restaurant is in. When you make your reservations they take your name and when you are seated the person who seats you and your waiter from then on uses your name. its like you have been coming there forever. The Manager stops by and ask how things are going. There is usually a "special treat" from Alan, maybe its just a juice drink, or a small appetizer, and that is also followed up by a dessert piece of something at the end. The rolls are delicious, finish one, and the roll boy is there again; the water glass is never empty. My favorite is when the person brings you meal and explains everything on it, rather than some places that when someone brings you the plate they have to ask you what you ordered. The waiters don't start as waiters, they start as the bus boys and work their way up, the learn how to be a waiter and all the different kinds of food that are prepared. When you go to AW's you are treated as someone who has been coming for years, even if it is you first trip there. Yes it crowded, most great restaurants are. And the awards won by AW is overwhelming. And the best part is that AW is usually there. There are some restaurants that the owner, top chef are rarely there.
Pros: Top food, top service, top restaurant.
Cons: Hard to get reservations

We found Side Street Inn through a mention in Gourmet Magazine! Great food, huge portions so best to order family style. Don't miss the poke, fried rice and fried pork chops. The salads are good, too. They've added valet parking at dinnertime which makes access super easy. It gets very crowded at night so call for reservations if you can, otherwise try to find a seat at the bar for drinks and pupu while you wait. Keep your eyes out for big-time chefs like Alan Wong, who visit Side Street for some local comfort food.

I have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years and it has not changed in that it has delicious food, good service, and low prices. The restaurant in Pearl City is much more romantic and has a quieter ambiance. Both restaurants are excellent! The prime rib is consistently delicious and lunches are quick and reasonably priced for business lunches.
Pros: Value, Good Food, Good Service
Cons: Long waits sometimes

On a budget? Want great food at awesome prices? Well Wailana Coffee House is just the place. There have been many a days when the budget was tight but I wanted a great meal and this is where I go. They have great hamburgers and dinners. The salisbury steak is ono. And the breakfasts are some of the best. Try the waffles.

I visited Chef Mavro's on a trip to Hawaii from San Francisco. Since we have a lot of good restaurants back home, it's tough to impress me. The restaurant is small and intimate, being a mile or so out of the Waikiki strip, but very modern and elegant. The onaga I had was exquisite and tender, and the chocolate marquise with a green tea mousse was intriguing. Portions aren't huge but a series of amuses between courses make up for it. Very personable, too - the chef's wife saw me dining by myself and came over to thank me for coming in.
