...time and time again I've strayed to other sashimi places in hopes of finding some variety in my life. What am I left with? Finding myself returning to Yanagi Sushi each time and even having given up the seemingly futile search for a *better* sashimi place.
At their worst the sashimi might not be the tastiest nor the freshest but even then the quality KILLS most other restaurants. The only one I've found comparable in terms of quality is Rokkaku, located at the Ala Moana Shopping Center. My dad (the pickiest person I've ever known, who should have been a food critic instead of a business owner) will agree with me.
They are almost always packed on any given night at any given time. They are open late Mondays through Saturdays, which is great for late-night cravings. One night after going to a sake tasting where they offered ONO (really really good) food we still ended up going to Yanagi to eat!! If our bill comes out less than $100 we weren't really hungry. It's not that they're expensive, because they're really not if you take quality and service into account, but it can get pricey. The last time we went we doubled our order of sashimi even though we weren't *hungry*... the serving amount is more than decent. Again, a great value.
They have combination dinners which are more than filling and you can pick from a wide variety of selection -- New York Steak, fried chicken, sashimi, tonkatsu (pork cutlet), butterfish, saba (mackerel), udon, tenpura... all off the top of my head but I know I've missed a few. They also have a lot of sashimi. My favorites are hamachi (yellowtail), sake (salmon), and uni (sea urchin). Their green tea is very good, sake selection is okay. Beer is great at a good price, but I've never tried their wine. They constantly walk by and there are a lot of them ready to help you. All you have to do is get their attention. The water is rarely empty

Walked up at 6:30 pm and promptly were seated. Incredible interior...loads of pictures and fun things. Hostess took us through the kitchen (optional 'tour'). Our waitress was top shelf...turns out she is a corporate trainer and we can see why! Food was just incredible!! We learned we ordered wayyyy too much! Great doggie bag fodder! Treat yourself to something unique and price worthy in the near Waikiki area. I will definately recommend this restaurant to all tourists....for once they won't be ripped off and treated rudely like so many eateries near Waikiki. (I work in Waikiki and hear HORROR stories from tourists paying $40-60 per meal and getting zero value and service)
Check your Discover bonuses....$20 gets you a $25 gift card to Buca's!!
Pros: Great food, service, atmosphere, easy parking (free!!)
Cons: Got a little noisy as the room filled. Two birthday parties so we just sang along with them!

I love, love, love Grace's chicken katsu plate lunch. Why? Crispy-fried boneless chicken breast cutlets that have been marinated so they're juicy and flavorful. The slightly tangy/spicy sauce (ask for an extra one when you get your plate). The so, so yummy chow fun noodles under the katsu. The practically perfect macaroni salad. Okay, sure, the kim-chee doesn't have much Korean-style fire to it, but it's cold crunchiness is a nice foil to the hot rice, noodles and chicken. So much food, it's usually good for 2 meals (for lighter appetites) and for one very satisfying meal for a very hungry person. I live in L.A. now, but everytime I go back to Hawaii, one of the first things I do after I land is go to Grace's to get my fix.
Pros: best chicken katsu! friendly, fast service. lots of food for the money
Cons: only available in Honolulu

I have read a previous review by NarcissistQueen and have to disagree with her completely. I have been going to this restaurant 2-3/week for over 15 years (even in their previous location a block away) and have never had any problems with insects or quality of the food. yes, the staff is very "indifferent", but hey, it's a Chinese restaurant. However, they are very clean! I find it hard to believe that someone eats there for their first time and finds an insect in their food, when I have eaten there over 15 years and haven't found a single one. Seems like somebody just wanted to get a freebie. There's a reason why this place is always crowded and people come back for more. I hate to write a review because I'm afraid if too many people knew about this "gem," it would make it harder for me to get a table there.
Anyway, the prices are very reasonable between $6.50-$7.50 for the average dish. They do stuffed tofu w/ fishcake or pork hash very well. Among my favorites are the black bean clams, mochi stuffed duck (order in advance), lemon chicken, and chicken salad. the chicken salad is not your usual heavy dressing. It's tossed in a light white pepper, celery salt dressing. you will not even notice the dressing, but you'll taste the flavorful simplicity. The food is HONG KONG and CANTONESE -style, so don't be expecting Szechuan or Shanghia cuisine. Expect long waits and a crowded dining room if there are banquets and on holidays . . . probably best to take out under those circumstances, but call well in advance.
Bottom line: Consistently GREAT FOOD, CLEAN dining room, great VALUE, average waiter/waitress service. Bring family, but leave the romance to other restaurants.
Pros: Excellent Food, Large Portions, Small Prices
Cons: Long waits on holidays and during large parties

Great authentic Italian food served family style so that a "small" serving feeds two or more. The meatballs that came with the spaghetti were somewhere between baseball & softball sized, weighing in at about 1/2 pound each. Gaudy, boisterous atmosphere, kitchen tours, and the Pope room, with the Pope's bust as a the table centerpiece. What's not to love? Reasonably priced. For best service, get there before the 7:00 pm movie crowd. Ample seating for large groups.
Pros: Large portions, great service, reasonable prices.
Cons: Noisy, not the place for an intimate dinner. Parking during peak hours can be difficult.

The pizza here was delicious! I had the creamy garlic sauce with pepperoni, mushrooms, garlic, the 3-cheese blend (standard), etc... It was great. The crust was even above par. The cheesy garlic bread sticks were great also. The service was pretty good also. It was loud in there though, very loud. It is a sports bar after all. Anyway... eat here, please!
Pros: Great pizza
Cons: Loud
