Leonard's is *the* place to get your malasadas, or Portugese donuts, in Hawaii. The malasadas here are reputed to be the best on the island, and they've won acclaim from local newspapers and have even been featured on a Food Network special on donuts. I've had great malasadas here (when they're fresh from the deep fry) and not so great malasadas (when they're soggy from sitting out too long). I think the only other malasadas that can even compare are the ones offered at the Punahou Carnival or the state fairs. And you can only get the latter when those fairs are running. Leonard's is the staple, though, and if someone's bringing malasadas to anything (potlucks, parties, office lunch), it's almost sure to be from Leonard's. The place is a bit run down, but this is an old Hawaii joint. There may be flashier restaurants popping up and down Kapahulu and Waialae Ave., but Leonard's will always be a classic.

Leonards is definitely a local favorite! Their malasadas are no doubt the best on the island, especially their custard filled ones. When its nice and warm, it's so delicious. Leonards has recently put up a nice new sign and it looks pretty cool. It has a retro look to it. Inside, however, it is still a little run down. For the number of clients they get, I assume they have enough money to renovate the whole bakery but I think they want to keep the homey look.

These are my favorite on-the-go treat, and no one makes malasadas quite like Leonard's. I haven't had the pleasure of visiting the bakery yet, instead stopping by the famous red and white vans that rotate between several locations. It always makes me happy to see the red and white van in the distance ~ these fluffy, doughy, sugary things are so addictive and I know I'm going to miss them immensely when I leave Hawaii.

While their pao doce--a yeasty nicely crusty portuguese sweetbread--is rather yummy, most people come here for the original great malasada. Available seconds after you order it, mysteriously still hot (or very warm at least), plain- or cinnamon-sugared, filled or not, it is one great hole-less donut. I personally think the filled versions (with haupia, chocolate, or guava) are rather disgusting and overly-sweet. Sometimes the inside of the malasadas are a little undercooked--but they are no less good (to me at least). They also have alot of non-malasada pastries and cakes as well. The cakes--chiffon cakes frosted with french buttercream--are very good and not overly sweet. Sometimes it is a pain in the behind if you are on Kapahulu going towards Diamond Head and want to make a left turn into Leonards.

Some times I'll stop at Leonard's Bakery to buy malasadas for my family. The light fluffy sugar donuts always hits the spot. I also buy Leonard's malasadas at the red and white stands at the large state fairs. You can always smell the malasadas cooking a mile away. Since we grew up eating this Portuguese treat, our family loves to eat them piping hot with sugar on them. There are other places that sell malasadas but they are not as good as Leonard's.
