The Saltry is a must do event if you visit Homer. It's a 45 minute boat ride on the Danny J to a small island called Halibut Cove. Halibut Cove is an artist community with a few galleries and an extensive board walk that goes around the public part of the island.
You take the Danny J boat across at 5pm. Dinner is at 6 and 7:30. Do the 7:30 dinner and walk around the island before dinner (good exercise, work up your appetite). Then, settle in for an awesome dinner.
To make reservations, you need to book the trip through Central Charters at 907-235-7847. You can usual do this a day in advance - but they do have limited (about 25 people) seating.

Small cafe (seats less than 30) shares room with working kitchen, in portion of remodeled log building. Clean, well-lit, efficient staff, and wonderful food at modest prices. Great soups, breads, sandwiches, daily special (spanokopita) and the absolutely best quiche ever eaten in any restaurant.

The Homestead is on par with Cups and Lands End. It's a comfortable, spacious place about eight miles out on East End Road. The owners are delightful and make you feel at home. It's always moderately busy, so reservations are suggested, although they have a nice bar and plenty of walk in space during the week. The food is excellent and changes regularly, although there are a few mainstay dishes. The views are spectacular - try to get a seat facing out over Kachemak Bay.

There are two Frosty Bears - one in town and one on the Homer Spit. We like the one on the Spit better, but if you're lazy, the one on Pioneer will do.
A sushi meal requires ice cream for dessert. An ice cream addict requires ice cream after a meal. So - we at ice cream. Yum. Bear Claw is always a chocolatey goodness winner if they have it.

Sourdough Express was started in 1982 in the back of a green truck. It's now an anchor restaurant in Homer between town and the spit. All three meals are good - the food is solid (sometimes great, always good), and the environment is cozy (although a little touristy). Make sure you check out the photo albums on the tables - it's good "alaska-rama".

Tonight was our first night in Homer. Since it's the July 4th weekend, it's very busy. So - we trolled around looking for a place and the Fresh Catch Cafe caught our eye. It's one of the obviously new places this summer in the first boardwalk / pier area on the right next to Frosy Bear's Ice Cream. The service was great - two nice young girls - and quick - we had a bowl of chowder within 2 minutes of entering the restaurant. Amy and I both had the pasta with shrimp and halibut - delicious. Simple, quick, relatively inexpensive - and healthy. We'll be back.

Best Italian food in town. 50 pizza choices, lots of standard Italian fare, and giant garlic everywhere. The atmosphere is great - casual but lively - and the bar is in the restaurant which adds some pep. The restaurant is a year old and they seem to be hitting their stride. Even the folks at Cups Cafe (the chi-chi place in town) orders pizza here late Saturday night for the staff.
