John Ball Park Zoo http://www.johnballzoosociety.org/ a great place to take your children anytime of the year. My most favorite display that they have is their wonderful penguin display.
The Zoo Society runs events all year long for groups and even families to enjoy. They are open everyday except christmas, and their admission price is very resonable.
The even run special days when it only costs a dollar or two to enjoy all the animals.
Last time I was there we saw the apes and chimps and monkeys. My children enjoyed watching the groups of them play together and eat.
Although my children do not like snakes, they were not resiliant in going through the reptiles to see the animals there that they do enjoy.

the bakery is amazing, i cant say enough about how great it is, located just outside downtown, great for trolly days and hertiage hill tour. the breads are fantastic, pastries are excellent, worth every penny. when ever there is bad service those people tend to "move on" it seams like. So the owners are doing a great job

John Ball Zoo is a great place to spend an afternoon with your kids! There are lots of fun animals to see - my son loves the monkeys best! The petting zoo is a must see - kids can touch goats, cows, and chickens.
This summer's Austraila exhibit is cool (loved the wallabys) but the cardboard koalas in the trees are kind of hokey.
The zoo is inexpensive, and the yearly pass is a particularly great deal!

Excellent location right by Van Andel Arena.
The meals were expensive, but it was the best seared tuna we've ever had. The staff was impeccable and flawless. The place was pretty swanky and men should probably wear a jacket.
There was a limited number of chicken/pasta/steak dishes.... which were all also excellent.
