I appreciate that the owners of the Wealthy Theatre are keeping it around and maintaining it for the good of the community. Whoever renovated it did a great job and I am glad that such an old theatre could be preserved for at least this generation. It's a great building.
I also like that they do community events and things to bring people together. They hosted a kind of independent musical there (although I didn't go I heard great things) and frequently host community events/meetings.
However, I really miss the $2 second-run movies that they used to show. Grand Rapids used to have a few second-run movie theatres, then it was just the Wealthy Theatre, and now there are none. This is very unfortunate. I think that second-run theatres would be a great use of the facility if they would only market them better. It can hold many people and would be a great way to get kids in off the streets in a cheap manner. We moved to the neighborhood 3 years ago when they were still doing these movies, and really had a great time - and also liked the fact that we were supporting our community.
I think that Wealthy Theatre could be at the top of its game if it brought back cheap second-run movies.

The Voigt House Victorian museum is an old victorian mansion that is restored to it original glory...you are taken on guided tours thru each of the rooms including the maids quarters, and the basement...you get to see what life was like / would have been like living in the victorian era. The museum is not open all time, only select tuesdays and saturdays, but is well worth the visit if you are a history buff. YOu do need to remove your shoes before entering, so you may want to plan ahead on your foot wear!

When you walk in , you are greeted by a giant skeleton (and I mean GIANT) of a whale hanging from the two or three story high ceiling. There are vintage automobiles, ancient artifacts and the list goes on. Your mind can just keep wandering right along with you. There are a lot of little displays throughout and you constantly have something to look at and learn about. The museum also houses laser light shows in their planetarium and carousel rides on their REAL carousel (it was restored and is truly amazing to see!) Definitely a place both parents and children will enjoy. They always have fun travelling shows going on as well. (Great gift shop too!)

The VanAndel Arena is a great place to watch a concert, ice hockey, arena football or any other event that comes to town. It is a huge arena that seats 15,000 and the transformation that takes place in between events is mind-boggling. Every time I attend an event at the arena it looks like a new place. The vendors carry awesome food and the arena is located in central downtown for easy access. Parking costs and food costs can get hefty so plan ahead.

The Van Andel arena is an excellent place for concerts and sporting events. The sound is excellent and there is not a bad set in the whole arena! The concession stands are pricey but there is a large assortment of food and drinks. The security is well trained and polite. While the Van Andel offers no parking, there are plenty of parking lots and garages close by. After the Van Andel, you can go and hang out at one of the many bars and night clubs within walking distance!

Studio 28 has 20 screens on which to show movies. I have found that when other theaters have had a movie leave, Studio 28 is still showing it along with the latest releases. I like this because it offers me more time to use coupons I have that cannot be used on newly released movies. They have 2 very large theaters to show the latest movies, and great stadium seating so that there is not a bad seat in the house!

The Standard Federal Ice Center is an indoor ice rink that is open all year. The rink is well maintained and doesn't cost much to get in. Ice skate rental is available for those who don't have their own skates. The rink has hockey team practice and games, but there is also scheduled times for open skate. It sometimes gets crowded, but it's lots of fun!

I purchased a bowling ball from spectrum lanes ($175 out the door) and was very impressed with the knowledge and expertise of the resident pro, Andy. Because I was changing styles of releasing the ball from straight to a mild hook I wasn't sure about what things to look for when buying the ball or how to throw it for that matter. Thanks to the modern materials in these newer bowling balls and guidance from Andy, I have now bowled my best game of all time. A 239! What a difference a knowledgeable person can make when making a purchase.
