I love this store! I'm new to Galveston and since I've been here have been to the strand several times. I didn't really care for the strand, it seemed to only have gift shops with useless things. Col. Bubbies was an amazing store though.
I'm 18, and female. I dont have much use for army supplies, but when I went in and saw their bags (shoulder bags, backpacks, etc) I had to have one. I bought a biohazard shoulder bag for fairly cheap, and have already started decorating it with various military pins, patches, and name tags that they sell for literally a dollar a piece.. It's a fantastic store, for anyone of any age with a creative mind and a love of unusual and out of the ordinary things!
Even if you don't need army supplies, you'll find something you like. They have some really awesome t-shirts, pants, and of course bags. As well some really cool trinkets, like the pins, patches, and tags I mentioned earlier as well as buttons, dog tags, and I'm sure a lot more.
If you've never been to an army surplus store, you should definately check this one out the next time you visit the strand. You'll certainly find something there that catches your eye!

As soon as I spotted the sign for Christmas on The Strand, I knew that I was going to have to go in to check it out. Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, and my husband and I love collecting Christmas decorations! I was not disappointed!
You have to walk to the back of the store to see the Christmas decorations, but there is a little bit of everything and it is all organized into sections. There are Christmas trees decorated throughout the area and bins with ornaments in them underneath the trees. There was a section with snowman decorative items, a section with angels, a section with "Santa"-themed items, and a section with nativities. My husband and I collect nativities and so this was one of the first places we looked at. They didn't have as great of a selection of nativities as I would have hoped for (only about 12) and they varied in price from $7.95 to $91. We did see a few that we really liked, though. We also found a snowman decoration that we really liked.
In addition to carrying Christmas decor, they also have plenty of other gift and collectible items. They carry a number of candles produced by the Tyler Candle Company. I have a few of these candles and they smell really good and burn for a long time. The prices were reasonable (ranging from $5.95-$19.95) and comparable with the prices I have seen in other areas. They also had keepsake and collectible items such as tea sets and figurines. I didn't see any "standard" brands such as "Enesco" (Precious Moments) or "Demdaco" (Willow Tree). All of these items seemed to be pretty unique.
They also have a small section toward the back and off to the side called "George's corner" that is for pet lovers. They have figurines of various dogs, cards, and other "pet" memorabilia.
This store (along with many others along the Strand) is not very "stroller friendly" (you cannot get back into the Christmas area at all with a stroller). You also have to go up a flight of stairs to get to it.
I think that this store had some fun things and a decent selection. I would like to visit again when it gets closer to Christmas to see if they have an even bigger selection!

If you've been to "The Galveston Strand" then you know that the endless stretch of shops can be exhausting and some are very good while others seem to be "duds." Lafitte's Beat was one of the better ones that we encountered on our trip. At the front of the store, they have all sorts of fun "beach-themed" items that would make great souvenirs including shells, sand dollars, and starfish. There were signs with cute sayings and I got a kick out of reading them (and even considered buying a few). One of my favorite things in this section was the display of sand castles. There were a range of sizes and each one was "unique." I have never seen anything like this before. Some of them had added touches like crystals attached to them or could double as candle holders. The prices were very reasonable and ranged from $10 for a small one to $25 for the largest one. The back section of the store has the largest selection of wind chimes that I have ever seen in my life. It was fun to just walk through and look at all of them! Again, the prices on these were very reasonable. This isn't a typical "souvenir" shop with junky items that would get thrown away...these items are made to last!
If you're looking for a fun, unique souvenir to take back for yourself or a gift for someone else, Lafitte's Beat is a great place to check out!

I visited this store in May and fell in love with a beautiful embroidered skirt set, but wasn't quite sure it was just right for my daughter's wedding in June, so I did not purchase it. I hunted everywhere, but never found anything comparable. I did not want to return to Galveston, since once I had made my decision about the skirt set, I only had a few days until the wedding and much to do. So, a co-worker suggested I call the shop and pay for it by phone and have them ship it. I called the wrong store first and when I called this store, I found they were associated and the owner sent me a picture of the skirt set to verify it was the one I wanted, took my order by phone and mailed me the package. She guaranteed it would be here before the wedding that Saturday and Friday afternoon, it arrived. Thank you so much for sending me that skirt set. I received so many compliments at the wedding and it was just perfect.
Pros: I received the best service

If you've visited Galveston anytime recently, you know that there is an abundance of souvenir shops along the beach and on the strand. If you're looking for a quality, unique souvenir, it can be exhausting as there seems to be an endless stretch of shops and many of them seem to carry the cheap, standard fare. Lafitte's Beat was definitely of the better locations that we encountered on our trip.
This definitely is not a junky souvenir shop with items that are cheap and that will break easily or quickly be discarded or forgetten. They have a number of quality items that appear to be made to last.
At the front of the store, they have all sorts of fun beach-themed items that would make great souvenirs including shells, sand dollars, and starfish. There were signs with cute sayings and I got a kick out of reading them (and even considered buying a few). Some of them had added touches like crystals attached to them or could double as candle holders. The prices were very reasonable and ranged from $10 for a small one to $25 for the largest one.
It was fun to just walk through and browse at this store, and we definitely spent some time here. If you're looking for a fun, unique souvenir to take back for yourself or a gift for someone else, Lafitte's Beat is a great place to check out!

This is a great store if you are luck enough to STUMBLE upon it. I say this because unfortunately they do not have a sign to help you locate it.
They have lots of really cool silver jewelry and the staff is friendly, if he hasn't been out the night before.
