if you have guests from out of town, and you can only take them out to eat once, take them to satchel's. The place is great, the long wait for a table is the fun part, you can drink, listen to live music, and peruse the junk shop. Once you get a table the salad is great, and the pizza is better than any I have had in the world.

The food is usually awesome. Personally I am not a fan of the plain cheese pie, but everything else I've tried I've loved. The crust is especially yummy. The salad is amazing-- once in awhile it seems lacking in dressing (which is homeade and also amazing) but you can just order a side of it, too. The best part about Satchel's is that it's big people and little people friendly. There are two play areas to take your kids while you're waiting (and you will wait!). It's just all-around funky and fun.

*There will be a wait.
*They pay there staff a living wage.
*You go for the atmosphere and the politics of supporting a local business with admirable ethics
*It is cash only
*The salad is killer.
I'm not a huge fan of their pizza--it's decent, not great in my opinion. But I seem to be the only person in Gainesville of this opinion.

Long lines- I usually get it to-go. Good pizza and fresh ingredients. Local place, local art. Hippie and local and cool. Best way to describe this place. Salad is good with homemade dressing, nuts, carrots, apple slices and parm cheese. YUM. The bus out front is neat, but you do have to wait for a long time. Don't forget your cash, cash only dude.

Satchels has good pizza and calzones, its above average really. BUT you have to wait for it, and its just not worth it. The last time I went with 5 other people and we had to wait almost 2 hours in the rain , we finally were seated on an outside table! We immediately asked for another, and waited another 20 minutes for a booth. We all ordered individual calzones from one waitress, got our drinks from another, our calzones came about 40 minutes later and two of the orders were wrong. My friend ordered the steak in her calzone and a giant bone was in it, when shown to the waiter (who at this point had yet to bring the redone calzones to our friends and we were all almost done with ours) he shrugged like it was normal. he offered a free dessert, and when she asked if she could just get a free small salad he sighed and went to the kitchen to "ask satchel" he came back and begrudgingly told her it was okay although "satchel" wasnt too happy about it. The Reordered calzones came as we were leaving and were boxed up, not comped at all! all in all we probably had 6 people "wait" on us, and not one of them was attentive or gave us correct drinks or food. I would only go back if i knew we wouldnt have the same service
Pros: good pizza, tasty calzones
Cons: horrible service

Where else can you get a complimentary bumper sticker just for dining? As a Gainesville resident, I've visited every pizza place this town has to offer and Satchel's beats them all. The owner, Satchel, works there daily, and on a couple occasions, has informed us that our pizza was his "favorite of the night." Arrive early as parking and tables are somewhat limited, but even if you have to wait, they have live music and a great beverage service. The calzones are wonderful and make 2 meals, the pizzas are huge and piping-hot. They only take cash, so come prepared, but there is an ATM inside. And you can always dine in the van! (You'll know when you see it.)
Pros: Fantastic Food, Great Atmosphere, Local Art for Sale
Cons: Crowded, Cash Only, Closed Sun/Mon

Located on an unusal, yet quaint lot in the Northeast side of Gainesville, this artisitc and strangely furnished restaurant serves up the best handmade pizzas with a wide array of toppings. Most of their food, (exclusively pizza, calzones, salads and locally made desserts) is vegitarian and vegan friendly and always delicious. The restaurant, just over 1 year old, was recently named the "best quintessential dining experience" in gainesville magazine. Check this place out, it's worth the trip.
Pros: Affordable, comfortable, good service
