One night my friend tried to call in an order to Salang, after being put on hold for an unacceptable length of time she was told that the pick up wait could be up to 2 hours, also unacceptable. So, on Saturday night, since we still wanted Afghan food we decided to stop by and place an order for pick up in person. After some time we finally got the attention of someone who told us that they were not doing pick up orders, because they needed to serve the guest that were already seated and those who were still waiting to be seated. We asked how long would the wait be if we still wanted to place an order and we were told that he had no way of saying it could be hours, it was already 8:30. It was bad enough that we were treated horribly, but this rude employee would not even make eye contact with us and only acknowledged us after we said excuse several times and got right in his face. We proceeded to Afghan Village in Newark and were acknowledged immediately, placed our order and were out the door 20 minutes later. I will never return to Salang Pass nor will any of our friends. I left Salang extremely upset for being treated as less than dirt, could it be because I am not Middle-Eastern? As a side note the food is much better at Afghan Village and the staff 10 times friendlier.

I love this place, the food is yummy and the service is great. I have even hosted my daughters first birthday party here and it was the best event. The manager made sure it was all planned well and the appetizers and entrees were very well presented.
I would definitely recommend this place for dinner or even take out, especially the Boulani.

About 60 min after ordering, food arrived.
Missing order.
Food not hot.
Messy plate.
presentation not good.
lets say from a afghan food scale of 1-10 , the taste is 5.

This place is a gem! We had no idea what to expect but having cased the menu first we knew there were several things that looked mighty interesting. When we got there on a Friday night the place was hopping but we only waited about 10 minutes for a table. Staff were friendly and happy to advise us on what to try. The pumpkin appetizer (Borani Kadoo) was delicious as were the eggplant (Vegi Borani Badenjan) and the Afgani ravioli (Vegi Aushak). The breads, the salad. All of it was tasty, fresh and full of interesting flavors like cardamom, garlic and spinach. Even the desserts rock. It's a bit like India meets Russia as far as the flavors and general approach. Unexpected and altogether a nice break from your avereage meal out. The interior is also quite nice. You must go there immediately and you must bring someone you wish to impress.

So i came here for my friend's birthday party and i had never heard of this place. Ther aren't too many interesting places in fremont, especailly like this place. The atmosphere really had a great affect. The bold colors complimented the bold flavors of the food. So we had a family style meal and we ordered this lamb kabob which was seared to perfection. It was so tender. There was also this interesting rice dish which had a lamb shank inside topped with raisins and carrots. Definetly an eye catcher.
For dessert we had rosewater icecream on a bed of rice noodles. Not your ordinary ice cream.
I would recommend this place to everone,
P.S. Try the floor seating...it's comfortable

If you are planning to visit fremont or live there, you must eat at Salang. The kabobs are the best that I have tried, specially the "Chopan Kabob" (Lamb) We also tried the Bolani and Mantoo. This ia an authentic Afghan Cuisine; for the great services the amount of food serve + it comes with salad and bread, the prices are perfect!
Wanted to have a different and unfurgatable experience visit Salang
Pros: Variety of food for meat lovers/vegetarians

I am sure lot of people will be surprised with this review, But my 2cents do not go for the food to Salang Pass specially veggies.
Ambience is good, Dessert are nice but little bit on the expensive side.
The service is horrible. People managing the restaurent are not professional.
I ordered the veg dish and Salad as well Afghani Nan were suppose to be coming with it. They did not serve me , when I was ordering the Dessert I realised that they did not serve us the salad and the Bread basket.
While paying I asked him why he did not serve and instead of accepting his mistake he started arguing wiht us that it does not come with the Vegie dish and when we showed him that its written in the menu, he shamelessly said please do not come to the restaurent again and was not having a courtesy to apologise , we had ordered one rice plate extra because there was no bread , and he charged us for that as well !!!
Ugly experience all in all...highly dissatisfied !

the decor and ambience is great as well, you have the option to sit on the floor in a middle eastern ambience.

For about $20 per person you can have a little piece of food heaven. Went there with the bf - first time for him, but i knew that he had to try - lo and behold - i was right (like always).
we sat in the middle on the low tables - felt like we were in a middle eastern movie or maybe in the middle east! - cept for those other diners surrounding us at the normal tables... we ordered the daal soup to start and the veggie aushak - both very yummy... we also ordered the spinach chicken and the tomato-y chicken with basmati rice. the meal includes afghani naan and salad with vinaigrette.
Even with the bf who's a big foodie we had left overs and were more, exceptionally more than satisfied, we were on the brim of exploding... not a good feeling, but sometimes you can't help it...
An older man came by and asked if we had reservations which was kind of strange b/c we were still allowed to sit there.. later on he came and asked how our food was... dunno why he asked why we had reservations...?
They don't serve alcohol but you can bring in beer & wine - at least I saw others do it as we were leaving.
Maybe the service has improved b/c our food was served very fast. Our server was nice, the only drawback was the busser who reached for my bf's plate before he was done, not a big deal but kind of an ambiance killer for a nice evening.
