If you want to gorge yourself, Cracker Barrel in Fishkill (on Route 9) is the place to do it. Cracker Barrel is the quintessential Southern chain restaurant -- generous portions, no skimping on the fat, with plenty of taste. I've eaten here a few times, and for the price, I"ve left happy. The quality is nothing to write home about, but Cracker Barrel has a solid following on the East Coast for a reason...comfort food. There are no diet items on this menu! An added plus (if you don't mind the calories here) is the good bang you get for your buck.

Sugar and Spice often gets written up as one of Dutchess County's best bakeries. I agree it is excellent. Their assortment of cookies and cakes is excellent and always tasty. Their products taste as if they are made from quality butters and sugars, not cheap substitutes. The location in Fishkill is a little small, so if you want to sit down and enjoy your treats there, there isnt a ton of space. But that doesn't impact most people, so I recommend stopping here for a birthday cake or a dessert to take to a dinner party.

If you want some big portions of family style foods, this is a good place to try. The food is good and the portions are very generous and although sometimes there is a waiting period to be seated, you can easily entertain yourself by browsing in their store section where they have a huge variety of things for sale.
PROS: good food and generous portions and nice giftshop.
CONS: sometimes you have to wait to be seated.

My friend chose this shop to be in charge of our bridesmaids dresses & alterations. From day 1, the experience was horrible! At the 1st fitting, the salespeople were incredibly rude, uttering comments about some of the girls' weight and commenting negatively on the gown choices. After I was measured, they told me I needed a dress 2 sizes too big because my bust was "inproportionate" to the rest of my body. When I went for the 2nd to last fitting, the dress was too big EVERYWHERE inc the bust and needed to be taken in. When I went in for the final fitting, it still wasn't fixed correctly and the woman told me I shouldn't have lost so much weight. How do you lose 3 inches in your bust over a 3 week period? Another one of the girls was forced to buy a plus-sized dress (plus sizes cost more), and wound up having the entire dress taken in to a "normal" size (she had only lost 5 pounds total). The shop also told the bride that she can add straps onto strapless gowns for a minimal charge, and she agreed to do so, so we could wear comfortable bras. At my 2nd to last fitting, the straps were completely uneven and you could see my bra. I had to argue with Antionette (one of the owners) to fix them. I took the dress home, assuming she did a good job, and when I tried it on to show my mom, the straps were STILL uneven and the seam holding one of them was coming undone. When I went back to the store to have her fix it, she told me it was my fault because I probably hung the dress wrong (I'm not dumb, I know how to hang a dress). She "fixed" them so they were even, but the stitching was completely horrendous and I can't believe this was done at a "professional" shop. In the end, not one of us walked out of there with a smile on our faces. There was something wrong with every dress, none of them fit correctly, hems were coming undone everywhere; it was just a horrible experience. If you want rudeness and unprofessionalism, this is the place to go.Otherwise, look somewhere else.
Pros: decent dress selection, catalogs, accessories available
Cons: extremely rude salespeople, sloppy alterations

I had been a member of BJ's warehouse club for some time, but since I am working at a new job, I decided to join Sam's Club, which is about one mile from my new office. The sheer convenience of the location is what made me switch.
I"m glad I did, because I will get more value out of my membership ($40 for a year for husband and I). We use warehouse clubs mainly for food, but the selection of other products at Sam's is excellent. It has a very similar offering compared to BJ"s. The only downside to Sam's (and it may just be this location) is that it does not seem as well staffed (much longer lines to check out) and seems a little more chaotic.
It is well worth the membership price, however, since we like to buy in bulks things such as cereal, chicken and beef, cereal bars and all the other things that are cheaper in bulk.

When I lived in Fishkill, I spent considerable time looking for a good hair stylist at reasonable cost. I asked a woman who's hair I really loved to recommend her stylist- and she sent me to Dazzles. The first time I went I loved what she did to my hair. The second time and there-after it was like a butcher shop. The stylist stopped listening to me, so I tried another hair stylist in the salon. The second one not only did a crappy job but had an attitude problem to boot. The prices here were about $50/cut, but you might as well go to a mall cutter for this quality. The stylists are unskilled and uninspired. They don't listen and seem to have their own agendas at all times. If it wasn't FIshkil and if there were other salons to choose from this place would have been put out of business.
