Sugar and Spice often gets written up as one of Dutchess County's best bakeries. I agree it is excellent. Their assortment of cookies and cakes is excellent and always tasty. Their products taste as if they are made from quality butters and sugars, not cheap substitutes. The location in Fishkill is a little small, so if you want to sit down and enjoy your treats there, there isnt a ton of space. But that doesn't impact most people, so I recommend stopping here for a birthday cake or a dessert to take to a dinner party.

You know how it seems most diners are set up the same, with similar menus? That's the I-84 Diner for you. Nothing makes it stand out as unique, exactly, but it draws both locals and motorists because of its consistently good food, large variety of menu items, and convenient location. Located at the entrance ramp to I-84 and next to Route 52, this place is busy almost all day. Its popularity isn't unearned, as the cooks always deliver. Prices are in line with other diners, with burgers under $10. You can get a good meal here for 2 for under $30.

Hometown Deli is right down the street from my office, on Route 52 in Fishkill. It is a great place to stop for a good sandwich. They certainly pile on the meat. Hometown Deli has a list of daily specials, with both hot and cold food featured. You are best to call your order in, but even when you walk in, you are promptly served. They also serve pizza there now, too, but I usually stick with sandwiches. The prices are on the higher end of the delis in this area, but they don't skimp on the size of the sandwiches.

Il Barilotto may be more expensive than other area restaurants, but the Italian cuisine is well worth the few extra dollars. All the pastas here are homemade and Fantastic! The sauces and ingredients in all the dishes are fabulous as well. Service is upstanding- professional and friendly. The ambiance here is perfect for a quiet meal or romantic dinner- the small trattoria is very cozy and warm. This is one of the area's only upscale Italian restaurants and it is one of the best.

Huge portions of FABULOUS BBQ at very reasonable prices. High quality meat, just the right amount of smoke, perfect "house" BBQ sauce (and many other choices of sauces)and all homemade, great sides. Fun casual atmosphere. We live more than 20 miles from this restaurant, and feel it is worth the drive, even when gas prices were more than $4.00/gal.!!

I grew up on Cuban food, cruised greater Miami's Calle Ocho, and lived in New Orleans for 12 years. All of this did not prepare me for the treat that was in store at Babalu Bob's. I had the Picadillo a la Jardiniera with black beans on the side, along with and nibbles of the croquetas de jamon, yuca, and arroz con pollo. A perfect flan topped off a perfect meal.
A Cuban family restaurant of this caliber would be an oasis anywhere; all the more so in this neck of the woods, where the second-best Hispanic restaurant within a 50-mile radius is a Cuco's. From the Berkshires, the Poconos, or New York City, it's worth the trip.
Pros: Very personal service.
Cons: No alcohol (not a con for me)
