I'm glad to see the judysbook reviewers being honest about this place. I have heard raves about this place before I checked it out. I think most reviews were very kind. I guess it is a hangout for Northwestern students. It looks like it used to be a Jazz club years ago based on the design. I don't care for the current decor too much. I think what makes it special is it's location and that is a good meeting spot for locals or tourists. I will kind also and give 3 stars.

The place is bit disheveled and reminiscent of some of my college apartments. This is most likely due to the close proximity of Northwestern University If you can get past the college co-eds, past the mix-matched chairs and peeling velour couches, you'll end-up with a delicious latte, espresso or cappuccino . Another really addition to your cup o' joe is one of their many decadent deserts. Not a coffee lover? They make a mean chocolate, peanut butter shake.

I don't really like the evenings at Kafein. I made the mistake of going there on a weekend night and it was packed with youngsters. It's fairly empty in the afternoons and now that they've got wi-fi, it's a great place to camp out with my laptop. Their milkshakes are delicious and they'll make them with non fat frozen yogurt. Oh and the mango smoothie is also fantastic. And they've got millions of coffee drinks, too. I've had food there a couple of times and it was nothing special. But my friend loves the apple pie.

A great "night life" alternative if you want to skip the bar scene or just need a night off from alcohol, although I think they might have some alcoholic coffee drinks. Remember to pay the parking meters, though if you come in the evening when they're still enforced!

Kafein has a pretty nice atmosphere compared to most of the coffee houses in Evanston because it's unique in decor, dark, and somewhere to go if you want to chat. It's also a nice place to hang out and maybe study... if you're a student. This is probably my first experience getting served at a coffee shop. I'm used to paying at the register and getting my goods right then and there so I can sit down wherever I please. I don't think I like having someone wait on me when I just want black coffee (i guess that might not be too common here considering they have really yummy desserts and specialty drinks). The service isn't that great either...meaning you'll have to wait a bit, so don't come here unless you're bumming around or have the time.

This is a popular place to hangout among Northwestern students, especially undergrads. They are open until late and have tiny garden for summer days. They offer a variety of creative drinks and deserts. They also serve sandwiches. Decor is rather interesting, it is a special place especially to go with friends, you should try the deserts, especially the apple pie.
