This shop buys a spark plug for less than 3.00 and charges customers 60-70% mark up, among other stuff, the owner is greek and a scam artist, he owns a 55 foot boat and various antique cars, anmd the father has made a fortune off stealing off the wealthy in evanston, i recommend they be closed up for bad business practices, also dont forget adam sigel the manager, he is the most dishonest person you will ever deal with. i will never take my cars there, nor will my friends.

I went for an oil change, was informed by Chris of some inspection "failures" he then brought me to my car in the shop pointed them out and explained them to me, I dont know alot about cars. He provided me a written estimate at which he called a "fair deal at a fair price". I have gone to two other local shops for an inspection and the problems were genuine. They quoted me slightly higher pricing with less of a friendly attitude. I will be going back to see Chris at Doc Able's and I would recommend them to my friends and family. Thanks alot Chris!

Improvements: i would just like to feel like i can trust them more, as they are close by. feeling helpless at the mercy of any shops' honesty is difficult..

Went here for a $9.99 oil change with a coupon I had received.
They tried to upsell me to a "winterize special" oil change for $40.
I declined. Told them the $10 would suffice.
I came back 30 minutes later and they told me I needed to seriously
be considering getting my front wheel bearing and seal replaced,
because it was in a dangerous state and that the tire could "fall off
while I was driving." Told me they could do this for the right front tire,
parts and labor for $450, but for me he'd drop it to $400.
I declined.
So, I told my father and uncle about this, they are both mechanics...
so they had me drive the car over and they would replace it for alot less....
well, they checked and the wheel bearing and seal was 100% fine.
They tried taking me for a ride, and failed. Be weary of this place, like
any auto mechanic shop.

i have had some bad and good experiences there. i brought my car in, which was running rough but started every time, and mysteriously, after they gave me the estimate for $2200 work, the next time i went to drive it, it wouldn't start. i was somewhat suspicious. until 2 people i know told me similar stories, so i guess it's a sign that something is wrong there.
i've had a few okay experiences, but now i wonder if i was gouged for parts (i felt like it at the time but felt helpless). got quoted 180 bucks for a part that i looked up, a geniune ford part, that costed $26. so...
i wish someone would recommend a good mechanic as well as critique them. is there a fair, competant mechani in evanston?

go here if you want an oil change and can say NO to their list of "problems" that need to be fixed. i've been here twice and the first time, they recommended (among other things) that i replace my fuel filter. i pointed out to them that the fuel filter on my car is not recommended to EVER be replaced. they just shrugged and said sorry. the second time, they recommended new brake pads and rotors (had them replaced a year ago) and new spark plugs (replaced them 4000 miles ago). enough said.

Made the mistake of taking cars here when I was younger and as far as I can tell was ripped off for each transaction. These people count on marketing materials and new clients for business because they do not generate informed return business.
I'll give two examples on the last vehicle I ever took there -- it had a bad relay in one front power window and was having trouble passing emissions. After 'repairs' to the tune of over a thousand dollars the car barely ran and although the window font window relay now worked (at an exorbitant amount for the the part) the opposing rear power window mysteriously no longer worked. The only other window that used the same relay, that is.
And when I say barely ran, I mean I had to donate the car to a charity for parts because it wasn't safe to drive and no one would buy it.

When new to Evanston, my wife naively took our car to Doc Ables. They "found" several problems for which they wanted to charge more than $1,000. We refused, took the car elsewhere, and were told most of the problems didn't exist. That was more than a year ago and no problems since then. The place is a great case study in how reassuring appearance and advertising can hide their basic crookedness.
