If you are looking for the not so mainstream book, go to Tsunami. It is located on busy Willamette, but their parking lot is somewhat adequate. I like how they have older books, so they are cheaper than buying brand new ones. They also do sell-back so you can exchanged ones you have read for new ones. Rare and out of print books are also generally available, or can be ordered. I'd definitely browse here before you go to the larger chains.

This bookstore has an extensive selection of alternative books. The shelves are filled with sublects from politics to healthful living. They carry self published and small publisher editions. This is a great place to browse. They also sometimes have entertainment which is usually very enjoyable.
Although small, this bookstore has a lot to offer. The staff is helpful.

This is the kind of bookstore that Eugene wants to keep. In addition to its great selection and friendly staff, there are local charms that Tsunami brings to the community. For example, unlike all of the big-time retailers, they bring musicans in to play. What a combo: books and a tune!
