Bagel Market -- Essex, Vermont
Bagel are the new what . . . English muffins? . . . donuts? . . . who cares! They're delicious and most Americans can't get enough of them. Boutique Bagel shops like Bagel Market in Essex sells the "fine wine" of bagels. Baked on the premises, if you get there at the right time in the morning you can get them hot out of the oven -- warm bagels are one of life's simple pleasures. Bagel Market offers on average 18 to 20 different varieties of bagels and sells them as sandwiches, by the dozen, or as its just on their own. Coffee and other breakfast pastries are available, but I'm partial to the bagels. They have just about as many variates of cream cheese for all their bagels as well -- you could eat there every day for a month and not have the same combination twice. The staff is friendly and courteous --I always ask for a lot less cream cheese than the half gallon they willingly smear on. I've always gotten my order to go, but there are tables and chairs available to sit and enjoy your meal. Bagels, is there anything they can't do?

Mimmo's Pizzeria and Restaurant -- Essex Junction, VT
I love pizza and Essex Junction has some great local pizza (see my other posts on Bingo's, Foodee's, and Leonardo's), but Mimmo's (pronounced Me Moes) . . . nothing compares to Mimmo's. Serving a southern Italian pizza -- thin pizza with a big, fluffy, crunchy crust -- Mimmo's in Essex Junction is a full service Italian restaurant and pizzeria. Prices are not unreasonable, but you pay for quality food made from high-quality ingredients. The budget-conscious should probably stick to ordering single slices served piping hot. Seating is limited and during lunch and dinner (especially on weekends) you're going to wait to be seated. The service is great and the waiters and waitresses are friendly and very helpful. Although Mimmo's is definitely a "family dining" experience, it doesn't feel like you're trying to eat at a day-care. Take-out is available, as well as delivery in a limited range. Mimmo's is definitely a "where-the-locals" eat kind of place -- simply, the best!

Hop Sing has a wide selection of all different types of Chinese food. Most of the items on the menu are pretty good, but I have had some problems with some of them in the past, such as them being served cold or with improper portions. However, the service is extremely friendly and will do whatever you request to make you meal meet your expectations. Overall: Great service, decent food, cheap prices. It is worth it in my mind.

Irish Eyes -- Essex Junction, Vermont
About the only time you need an eye exam is when you really need an eye exam. I've had three eye exams in the last ten years and used a different opthamologist each time. For my latest visit (and trust me I really needed to have my eyes checked) I went to Irish Eyes in Essex Junction. Doctor Irish was great. He was thorough, friendly, and took the time to make sure I took all the proper tests (he even took the time to test me and confirm that yes! I am colorblind, or color deficient as the case may be -- color challenged?) to figure out what prescription I needed. His staff was friendly and attentive and even stayed open late to fit me for my new glasses. There was no high pressure sales pitch like I've gotten before in chain stores just fast courteous service and a willingness to help the customer. If you choose to get your frames through Dr. Irish's office it will take them seven to ten days to have the lenses ground and put into the frames you select, which is the case with most opthamologists who don't have corporate backing to build a lab in their store next to the food court across from the information kiosk. Irish Eyes . . . Smile! ;-)

Foodee's Pizza -- Essex, Vermont
Steps away from the Essex Cinemas is a hidden secret, Foodee's Pizza. Serving take-out as well as dine-in, Foodee's serves a great tasting, thick crust, pizza. What makes them a great place to eat before a movie is their selection of slices made to order. Check out the specials-of-the-day, unusual, but also satisfying -- they serve a four cheese with pepperoni that is out of this world. The service is excellent. Your order is brought to your table and served on a pizza stand, think a cake stand, but for pizza. Beer is available in bottles with a selection of micro brews that rivals better bars and taverns. A couple of slices and a coke or even your favorite micro-brew will cost you less than $10 -- a better deal (and better tasting) than popcorn and a soda at the movies, that's for sure. Do Foodee's!

Bingo's Pizzeria -- Essex Junction
Wedged in between a jeweler and a dry cleaner in a rather non-descript shopping plaza just passed the fairgrounds, Bingo's Pizzeria is short on aesthetics and long on taste. The daily special ($1 for a slice of cheese pizza) and a small Pepsi cost me less than $5. I came in shortly after the noontime rush and although the table and chairs were clean, I table I sat at was out of napkins, but this is a pizza joint not fine dining -- it's expected, it adds the necessary ahhmm-be-aunts. "Best whole-wheat crust in town," the owner told me. Not being able to do a more scientific taste test, I would have to agree. Bingo's serves an average crust (not too thick or too thin) pizza and the whole wheat crust was crunchy and satisfying. Although there was an all-you-can-stuff-in-your-pizza-hole buffet, I stuck with a couple of slices, but a quick glance revealed the buffet comes with a tossed salad as well. The best thing anyone can say about any restaurant is that they would go back and that they would recommend it to family and friends. On both counts, bingo!

Ray's Barbershop -- Essex Junction
I can't say for certain that I remember my first haircut, but I can tell you that I went to that same barber every couple of months for 21 years. It had the spinning poll outside striped in red, white, and blue and Anthony, the barber, gave out a blow-pop when he finished cutting your hair, bliss. I have been looking for a good barber ever since I moved to Vermont over 10 years ago -- a barber like I had back in those halcyon days of my youth -- and I haven't found him/her yet (and here it comes) . . . until now. Ray's is your typical family barber (for something more chic and sophisticated read my review of the Men's Room) with one twist -- Ray recently sold off the business to three women who now cut hair at Ray's. The look and feel inside is very much like I remember from that "barbershop of my youth," call it hunting lodge chic. Service is quick and easy with great care taken to make sure you get the cut you want and that you look good on your way out the door. With a tip your cut should cost you no more than between $15 and $18. Get your hair cut and bring the kids, I'm too old for a lollipop, but it wouldn't surprise me if ladies running Ray's kept that tradition alive as well.

If you are a fan of gourmet Chinese/Cantonese/Szechuan cuisine, this is the place for you to go. I don't eat out often but when I do, I only go for the best food out there. Joyce's offers fresh Asian cuisine cooked in 100% vegetable oil and no MSG. Their vegetable spring rolls are to die for! Thin, crispy, and not greasy or heavy. They have an interesting assortment of veggies inside. Baby peas and corn kernels are a few of the veggie surprises rolled inside. These veggie rolls are only better if you choose to dip them in the duck sauce that Joyce's supplies with them. If you go to Joyce's and don't try the vegetable spring rolls, it is like going to the Louvre and missing the Mona Lisa!
If you like it spicy, this is also the restaurant for you! They will adjust the heat to your desired temperature, but be warned, what they consider average is a bit hotter by most restaurants' standards. The Kung Pau bean curd with peanuts is delectable as well as carnivorous pursuits such as the beef and broccoli. They don't skimp on the vegetables and they are always fresh and cooked to perfection.
Check out Joyce's Noodle House when you are in town. You will be glad you did. They aren't expensive, but know it is not "cheap eats" ordering off the menu a la carte. They do offer a good value with their Combination Dinners that are offered all day, ranging in price from $6.25 to $6.75.
Joyce's is located at 5 Carmichael St in Essex Jct.

Essex Cinemas --Essex Junction, Vermont
For those of us out in the hinterlands of Chittenden County, this is the best place to see a movie. No need to head to Burlington or battle the traffic in Williston or South Burlington for that matter -- as long as all you want to see is the latest dregs Hollywood has to offer. It is not the theaters fault if the movies they're asked to show stink, but why sacrifice something that challenges or stimulates conversation for some remake that was over-done long ago? The marquee at the Essex Cinema is more symptomatic of the businessman's need to put butts in the seats rather than appeal to the quirky or challenging that run the art-house circuit. I'm ranting, sorry. The screens in Essex are great, the sound is more than acceptable and the stadium-seating is expected and appreciated by modern movie-goers who demand as much. Tickets are reasonably priced at $7.25 for adults (after 5:30 PM) $5.75 for matinées and children under 11 for $4.74 at all times. Their are discounts for seniors and the military as well. The lobby is open and inviting except, of course, when it's crowded. Essex Cinemas is a great place to see a movie, too bad too few great (or even good) movies play at the Essex Cinemas.
