Bingo's Pizzeria -- Essex Junction
Wedged in between a jeweler and a dry cleaner in a rather non-descript shopping plaza just passed the fairgrounds, Bingo's Pizzeria is short on aesthetics and long on taste. The daily special ($1 for a slice of cheese pizza) and a small Pepsi cost me less than $5. I came in shortly after the noontime rush and although the table and chairs were clean, I table I sat at was out of napkins, but this is a pizza joint not fine dining -- it's expected, it adds the necessary ahhmm-be-aunts. "Best whole-wheat crust in town," the owner told me. Not being able to do a more scientific taste test, I would have to agree. Bingo's serves an average crust (not too thick or too thin) pizza and the whole wheat crust was crunchy and satisfying. Although there was an all-you-can-stuff-in-your-pizza-hole buffet, I stuck with a couple of slices, but a quick glance revealed the buffet comes with a tossed salad as well. The best thing anyone can say about any restaurant is that they would go back and that they would recommend it to family and friends. On both counts, bingo!

Foodee's Pizza -- Essex, Vermont
Steps away from the Essex Cinemas is a hidden secret, Foodee's Pizza. Serving take-out as well as dine-in, Foodee's serves a great tasting, thick crust, pizza. What makes them a great place to eat before a movie is their selection of slices made to order. Check out the specials-of-the-day, unusual, but also satisfying -- they serve a four cheese with pepperoni that is out of this world. The service is excellent. Your order is brought to your table and served on a pizza stand, think a cake stand, but for pizza. Beer is available in bottles with a selection of micro brews that rivals better bars and taverns. A couple of slices and a coke or even your favorite micro-brew will cost you less than $10 -- a better deal (and better tasting) than popcorn and a soda at the movies, that's for sure. Do Foodee's!

If you are a fan of gourmet Chinese/Cantonese/Szechuan cuisine, this is the place for you to go. I don't eat out often but when I do, I only go for the best food out there. Joyce's offers fresh Asian cuisine cooked in 100% vegetable oil and no MSG. Their vegetable spring rolls are to die for! Thin, crispy, and not greasy or heavy. They have an interesting assortment of veggies inside. Baby peas and corn kernels are a few of the veggie surprises rolled inside. These veggie rolls are only better if you choose to dip them in the duck sauce that Joyce's supplies with them. If you go to Joyce's and don't try the vegetable spring rolls, it is like going to the Louvre and missing the Mona Lisa!
If you like it spicy, this is also the restaurant for you! They will adjust the heat to your desired temperature, but be warned, what they consider average is a bit hotter by most restaurants' standards. The Kung Pau bean curd with peanuts is delectable as well as carnivorous pursuits such as the beef and broccoli. They don't skimp on the vegetables and they are always fresh and cooked to perfection.
Check out Joyce's Noodle House when you are in town. You will be glad you did. They aren't expensive, but know it is not "cheap eats" ordering off the menu a la carte. They do offer a good value with their Combination Dinners that are offered all day, ranging in price from $6.25 to $6.75.
Joyce's is located at 5 Carmichael St in Essex Jct.

Speeder & Earl's -- Essex Junction, Vermont
Speeder & Earl's is kind of an institution in Burlington and environs, but with the over-saturation of coffee shops in the area what possessed S&E to open their Essex Junction shop? I've been in their three or four times and the place is D-E-A-D, dead. Six shots of espresso couldn't wake this place up -- which is a shame because the coffee is good, heck it's great! You'll pay about $1.75 for a medium and in the neighborhood of $2.50 for a large. All the usual "caffeine" suspects are present and accounted for as well as some sweets, brownies, coconut concoctions, and cookies, big cookies the size of pie plates. Again, I can't argue with the fare you could do a lot worse for coffee, a lot. I guess I just don't understand how a business can support a space (square foot-wise) and (social-wise) that would be a good place to cool off after a big score.
