A few years ago, I wanted to get my girlfriend (now Wife) the gift of relaxation and pampering, so I checked out Douglas J salon. I ended up not getting a gift certificate (for other reasons), but I found out that this is a great place.
The salon is rather expensive, but you can go to the learning center, where salon-students work on you at a highly discounted price. And apparently the work they do is fantastic.
So, all in all, if you're looking for a high quality salon at barber shop prices, check out the learning center at Douglas J in East Lansing.

My hair dresser had just moved to Atlanta and I was in desperate need to have my hair cut. I tried out Carleana and she did a great job listening to me and my concerns and always asked before she did anything. Very professional and with prompt service! She was done so quickly that I wanted to stay longer! Wonderful job and I will definently go back to her. It's hard to find youthful professionals and her price for a haircut is fairly reasonable!!!
Pros: excellent hair cuts

When in East Lansing, if you need a quick haircut and you’re a guy, head down Grand River and look for the spinning Barbers sign. Campus Barber looks like it has been on Grand River just as long as Michigan State University has. While I have seen a female barber in the shop, it is mostly aimed toward the male audience (notice the assortment of Playboy magazines in the rack for reading material as you wait).
Not only do they cut your hair, but they’ll also slap some warm lather on your neck and clean up your neckline with an old-style sharp razor. Campus Barber, a great, quick way to get your hair cut on Campus.

Bohemian Barber is a unique styling "salon." It is a bit funky...as in artsy...which is cool. The stylists are skilled...the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. They welcome MEN and WOMEN ...so don't be misled by the "barber" moniker. After putting my trust in the stylist, I have always walked out of Bohemian Barber with a bit different cut than the last time and happily so!!! (I have heard that they recently put in a manicurist...haven't been there since...hope the smell isn't too toxic!...but for some of you a manicurist might be what you are looking for, I suppose.)

If you have drove through East Lansing lately, you've probably seen the house-turned-business that is BA Florist on the corner of Grand River and Hagadorn. The two-story store contains a nice mix of cozy gifts and beautiful flowers.
On occassion, I have used BA Florist to create unique flower displays. They do deliver as well, like any good florist should.
The prices are reasonable, but somewhat on the fancy side ... but its nice having a world-class florist right in town. So next time you're ordering flowers for your loved one, or whoever the special person may be, check out BA Florist on Grand River.

Steven L. Marvin is a great value for a salon. They use Aveda products so they smell great. The place is very reasonably priced especially for the service you get. They usually give you a head or scalp massage with the haircut. Very nice place, seem to have a well trained staff. I used the lower end beginners and I had a great experience. I also enjoyed the eyebrow wax.

More
I am acutely aware that it is only a matter of time before I lose my hair. My family genetics are against me and it’s practically inevitable. I figure while I’ve got it, I might as well make sure it looks halfway decent. The other problem is that I’m an intolerable cheapskate and do not like to spend too much money on things like my hair, even with its days numbered.
In college I found the wonderful balance that is known as the cosmetology school. At Douglas J, you get the opportunity to let enthusiastic young students near your head with scissors and razors. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Actually, it kind of is.
The beauty school students are under supervison from their instructors and I have yet to have a haircut go truly wrong. There will be minor inconsistencies between what you describe to the stylist and what you get, but that can be chalked up somewhat to their inexperience in translating laymen descriptions of how they want their hair to look to barber-speak. If you are truly picky about how your hair looks (like a girlfriend that I talked into going there once), you might want to skip the minor-leagues and go straight to the pros. However, for someone who is a little less particular about his or her melon, it’s a great value for $11. The service includes a scalp massage, shampoo, conditioner, haircut and a second shampooing after the cut. It takes about an hour start to finish, but I find it’s a great, cheap way to have a relaxing haircut.
