During my visit last month to the Sarah Duke Gardens http://www.hr.duke.edu/dukegardens/index.html at the campus of Duke University, I was really amazed to still be able to see gorgeous plants and flowers in the middle of October! There are over 55 acres of gardens here - even a section that dedicated soley to the native plants of North Carolina. I can imagine this being a spectacular visit really any time of year - not just spring or summer - as their plantings change with the season.
The gardens are open daily 8am to dusk and some of the gardens are even available for weddings. This was just a wonderful way to spend a fall day and I highly recommend a visit if you are planning a tour of Duke University or the surrounding areas.

It's springtime and it's sunny outside... how about a picnic?!? Duke Gardens is my favorite picnic spot! Especially now that all the flowers are blooming. Down by a creek is a big grass field and you can sit in the shade or play freezbie out in the sun. If you're a photographer, this is an amazing place to visit.

Duke Gardens is a really beautiful place year-round. The gardens are amazing and the walking paths take you by some gorgeous stuff. Plenty of places to sit and relax, as well as larger fields to run and play. You can sit by one of the ponds and watch the birds and the turtles. They allow dogs, which is nice. You might also catch a wedding if you are there on a Saturday. This is definitely a "don't miss" in the Triangle.

Duke Gardens are beautiful year round! There is always something beautiful to look at there. My girls (3 and 6) love the big Magnolia tree by the open area. They live to climb in it. Another favorite is feeding the ducks. I think everyone likes to do that because the ducks never seem very hungry! Their 3rd favorite area is the natural trails - it is wooded so it isn't too hot in the summer. Really fun trails for kids to explore. April is a great time to see the tulips there, my favorite

When the weather's nice, I like to pack a picnic and have a nice, long, and leisurely lunch. It can get a bit crowded on the weekends, but that's sort of to be expected when it's pleasant outside. The garden is probably at its prettiest in the spring when all the flowers are blooming but it;s pretty nice at other times of the year, too. I also enjoy feeding the ducks in the pond with my leftover bread, or watching little kids stuff the birds with bread (each little kid seems to come to the pond with a big bag of bread).

Sarah P Duke Gardens, located on Duke's campus in Durham, offers a spectacular experience for the nature lover in you. During the Spring and Summer, when the flowers are in full bloom, bring your special some one along and have a lazy picnic on the grass while you enjoy nature's bountiful scenery.

This is a wonderful garden. I love how they have different sections that reflect different climates. When you first walk in through the front entrance there are dozens of different varieties of roses. During the spring when they are in full bloom the fragrance is wonderful. There are different sections like the "stairs" where many a wedding has taken place. It is also a wonderful place to take pictures. There is also a duck pond where kids of all ages love to feed the ducks. They are quite brave and at times will eat from your hands. You can see turtles swimming in the pond and also a blue heron visits there. On warm days, it's great to spread a blanket for a picnic or just lie around reading your favorite book. There is also a wide open grassy area where you can play a casual game of frisbee.
It is not too big but by no means small. They also have guided tours, workshops, classes, a horticulture library, a small gift shop, etc. You can also hold events there at the Doris Duke Hall.
Parking used to be free but you have to pay now to park. But it is worth it!

The Sarah P. Duke Gardens is absolutely the most beautiful place in Durham year-round. Each season brings new and different displays of plants and flowers. The gardens are great for walking, jogging, walking your dog (on a leash!), reading, throwing a frisbee, having a picnic or taking a nap! The grounds are meticulously maintained. We had our engagement pictures taken at Duke Gardens and my mother was married under the Pergola. Duke Gardens holds many fond memories for Durham.

I just love coming to the Duke Gardens on a nice spring or fall day. Located in Durham, these gardens are vast and beautiful. Every time I have been here, I always see a bride and groom posing for pictures. There is a fee to park your car, however if you spend a few hours there, it is worth it!

The Duke Gardens are nationally known for their vastness and beauty. It does cost to park, but only during certain times of the day, and often the ticket machine is out of order. A popular place for weddings, it is one of the most beautiful places around. Come enjoy a picnic, play frisbee with your dogs, or watch the ducks on one of the many ponds. The Doris Duke center is also a nice addition with a beautiful space that can be rented out.
