I don't know how much it's changed since 2002, but I remember that the parking situation wasn't great -- not enough spaces and it was expensive. There wasn't a cell phone waiting area but at the time you were still able to wait in the car by the baggage area -- just as long as you didn't leave your car. Although there was a couple times when I had to pick up someone and the curb was full so I had to drive around -- and it was confusing; I'd miss the left turn and have to take the long way around.
Sky cap service was usually pretty good and efficient, which was a plus -- I tend to over pack my suitcase so they're usually heavy.
I know they were building a new area that was almost complete the last time I was there, but obviously I can't comment. Thank goodness on the update though -- the place was old and ugly.

I've been to this airport so many times over the years but lately its had to change
a lot. I use to love when my family could come in and watch from the windows
when I would be flying off but now everything is about security. The airport is
huge but thank goodness everything is organized and has signs. I'm getting a little
edgy because I'll be flying to Florida in two weeks. I'm very grateful for the nice
airport but its been a couple years since I've been on a plane. I'll be saying
lots of prayers.

Although I've used the Detroit Metro Airport mainly for layovers, I've noticed a lot of great features of this newly-renovated facility. The main terminal is very long, making walking from one end to the other a bit of a pain. However, the designers thought about this and installed an elevated tram system to carry travelers above the gates, making a stop at each end and the middle of the terminal. Food options are plentiful here and include several chain-restaurants like Chilis if you have significant layover time. Everything about this airport is very open, which is a nice change from the tiny gates that pack in some travelers. Overall, an aesthetically-pleasing and efficient airport.
