Although I love Mexican food, I was never a big Tamale eater until I had them from here. You have to order specialty tamales an hour in advance if you want them by the dozen, but they are well priced and everywhere I take them, they disappear with smiles and appreciative remarks on how good they are. My brother expects them for his birthday, Jalapeno and Cheese are our favorite. Fresh and tasty describes everything I've had at Evie's. It doesn't have the best atmosphere, but it is clean and the food will definitely bring you back, especially the Tamales!

Evie's is the best Mexican I've ever tasted, from here to Texas. The tamales are too die for with the different varieties, you can get sweet tamales (raisin and pineapple), spicy, bean and cheese, beef and bean and so on. They've come along way considering they first began their business in the basement and opened a resturaunt and have been open for about 20 years.
Not to mention the workers are pretty much all family (related).
Pros: Family atmosphere, pleasant, quick service and fantastic food.
Cons: small and should be open later. Alcohol would bring in more business.

I tried this once for a variety in life. Their service is good. Their dishes are priced resonably. I wouldn't say it's cheap there but for the quality of food they serve its good. They have a good combination of chefs who make different varieties of dishes as per customer's wish. I ordered for something spicy and they got me the right dish for my taste buds. I will definitely go for it when I crave for mexican food.

A not-so-well-known secret amongst those of us who have ever worn a uniform is that Evie's offers discounts for military and police officers, etc. who eat there in uniform. Not that we wouldn't eat there anyway! The food is terrific and the discount applies to your take-out order as well. Evie's - the only mexican restaurant I know of that is proud to show support to service people.
Pros: The uniforms @ lunch!, Friendly staff, The Caldo (authentic)
Cons: Kinda small, No booze

Well, if you didn't, why would you be eating here? Evie's makes outstanding tamales, and they are a fantastic value. About once a month, I have to make a 20-mile one-way trip down to pick up a couple of dozen to go. With a side of rice, and some chips and salsa, dinner is a breeze. Sure, there are bigger restaurants in Mexicantown, but none with better tamales.
Pros: Tamales, Tamales, Tamales
Cons: Decor

Evie's Tamale is the best place for a Mexican style breakfast. I would recomend it too all. The Tamales are the best the city has to offer.
