This is a fun place to go with a group. Everyone orders small portions of many different foods and everyone just shares. It can get pricey because you never really know how much food will be enough

I took to customers to Small Plates this past Tuesday prior to a Tiger game. They were really looking forward to it due to all of my ravings from previous visits, however unfortunately it wasn't the same. I believe it was due to the terrible service, if I wasn't with customers I would have asked for Management. We waited and waited to be greeted, then waited forever for drinks fortunately there was a waiter working in the section next to ours that gladly helped us out. It wasn't that busy or I would have been more understanding it just seemed like he disappeared and no one knew where he was...too bad after all the bragging I had done!

We ate at the Small plates in Royal Oak. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a less than friendly man who waited it appeared, for us to greet him. After a brief pause, I said Dinner For Two and he asked us to wait and wlaked away. After returning, we were told that he couldn't offer us a table because the restaurant was booked for a private party at 7pm. Being that it was 5pm, and by looking around noticing at least 7 unoccupied tables, we were somewhat confused by the lack of service. Well, since we drove a half an hour to get there from Clinton Twp, we were offered a seat at the bar and took it.
Once seated at the bar, our orders were taken and drinks delivered. About twenty minutes later, only my meal (Beef Stir Fry) was delivered. Once again, we were perplexed. I asked the bartender the whereabouts of my wife's dinner. He told me, with a staright face, that it's like Meditteranean style, it's delivered as it comes to the window and meant to be shared. (a ticket for 2 prepped 20 minutes apart?)
For the record, the meal was that of less than normal portion size and clearly not enough to be shared. So, my wife politley bowed out of eating much of my meal and I didn't think it gentlmanly to eat in front of her, so we kind of poked at it until her meal arrived twenty minutes later. My meal was now cold and as we looked down at her Chicken Stir Fry. It swam in the extra sour sauce that she ordered to be placed ON THE SIDE and turned her meal into a bowl of almost soupy proportion. As the bartender returned, we expressed our displeasure in her meal and all he could do was offer her was more rice, to soak up the extra sauce that overwhelmed the taste buds at this point.
After poking at her meal for a few minutes, we decided it was time to go and travel back to our side of town. To say the very least, we do NOT recommend Small plates if you're looking for good service and the potions are not commensurate with the prices.

Wow! Who wrote these reviews? Someone that works there maybe? The atmosphere is great but the place is small. We waited 25 minutes for a table and another 10 for a waiter. We ordered french fries which were handcut fries. They weren't out of the ordinary but did help fill us up. We also got crab cakes. They brought 3 that were the size of a 50 cent piece and were $15!! I would have expected at least 4 to split between 2 people since they were so tiny. They tasted like something bought from a frozen food section though. Also had the lettuce wraps. Decent but I've had better at PF Changs. Finally, we had the mushrooms. They were tasty but only gave us 3 little pieces of bread to split between 2 people. Once again, very small portions.
Definitely overpriced and overrated. We spent $46 not including tip and left feeling hungry. This is definitely an appetizer bar. We won't be back for dinner but maybe drinks ONLY!
Pros: Good bar atmosphere
Cons: Small overpriced "appetizers" disguised as entrees.

small plates is by far my favorite restaruant in detroit. the atmosphere is great and the food is wonderful. the servers are always pleasant and i've never had to wait more than 15 minutes to be seated. the variety of the menu leads to a wonderful dining experience. i definately recommend the ribs and hand cut fries. so, the next time that you're out give small plates a try.
Pros: prompt service, great food, friendly servers, amazing atmosphere
Cons: none

This is a toppas restaurant that has some yummy food. They have a small, yet good menu that you can order appetizers from and then split them with friends. Its a great place to go for a date or with friends. Its fun tasting all the different foods. I really liked their small pizza's too. Plenty of parking, if not on the street there is a parking garage close by. Prices are a little high for the amount of food you get, but still a fun place to go.

I have been to Small Plates several times and was never disappointed. It is a unique restaurant that serves specialty appetizers. They also have good alcoholic drinks. The prices are very reasonable . The servings are generous for an appetizer. This is a nice hidden restaurant in the downtown detroit area. It is small and cozy. The lights are dim. If you are ever in the area or want to make a special trip the baby back ribs are awesome. The fries remind you of the french fries that you get at amusement parks and sprinkle vinegar on. Yummy. The pizza is also to die for. It is brickoven pizza. Not like your ordinary everyday hot and ready pizza. Definitely worth the drive.

My recommendation? Skip Small Plates and proceed directly to Lafayette Coney Island. There you will find sufficient amounts of truly tasty food, instead of eponymous small plates filled with pretentious, pseudo-Continental fare. I know the purpose of tapas restaurants is to share with the whole table and taste some of everything, but there's no reason you can't share Lafayette's chili cheese fries and onion rings (except they're so scrumptious, you won't want to).
The main draw of Small Plates is its location across from the Detroit Opera House. Opera going friends, make your way downtown a little earlier so you can catch the People Mover to Greektown and eat a decent meal there (or save up your appetite for post-show coneys at Lafayette).
