After our old dog died, I offered to get my mom a puppy, not as a replacement for our dog, but to fill the void in our house and hearts, and to give another sweet animal a home. We thought about rescues, and other shelters, but some of them are so strict that filling out the applications is a bit like filling out a $100,000 loan application. We ended up checking out the Detroit Animal Control Shelter after a rumor was circulated online that all the animals would be put to sleep if not adopted before Christmas. Well, my mom and I, both being animal lovers, could not let this happen, and decided to give it a shot. Before we went, we found out the euthanasia rumor was just that, a rumor, and unfounded and untrue. We still went, determined to give an animal a good home. It's in a weird location on Jefferson, far away from any real downtown area, but worth going there. We ended up getting a puppy we named Pete, and he is the joy of Mom's life right now. The shelter itself was pretty crowded, and loud! It's average as far as cleanliness goes, I for one know it's hard to keep everything under control when you've got numerous un-trained half-wild puppies and some scared nervous dogs and cats in there. The staff and volunteers there were very helpful and friendly, and seemed to care about the animals rather than just view it as a job. The adoption prices are pretty much on par with other shelters ($100 for puppies/dogs older than 4 months, 175 for puppies under 4 months), but there's no hundred-question application, which I know is a deterrent for a lot of people considering pet adoption. If you can find it in your heart and home to adopt a dog or cat today, go to the Detroit Animal Control Shelter! They'll be so grateful!

The better part of the DiFalco family lived on Montclair in Detroit back in the
early 1960's. I thought we were a rich family because every other house on
the block was owned by one of my uncles. What I found out later is that we
were poor back than. Although Detroit is not qualified now to be labeled a
place to raise your family, I have fond memories of being able to sit on your
porch at night and waving at the neighbors. Back than we didn't even lock
our doors. Unfortunately the block I grew up on is missing the houses that
were knocked down now. What a shame what a period of time can do.
Downtown Detroit is still a hotspot for excitement with the Casinos, Coamerica Park, Ford Field and the Fox Theatre.
