If you havent been, dont try to understand beforehand, just go. It defies words or explanation. It's sort of like a temple for a secret society that you are initiated into on your first visit. Evokes the following feelings... JG Ballard, Mutter Museum, The Brothers Quay, Jan Svankmeyer, Alchemy, Max Ernst, Proust, Dystopia, Decay, Surrealism, Guy Maddin and Clever jokes...

There are almost no words to describe this place. From the skeleton of a European mole to a miniature, lit-up model of a trailer park, the exhibits and displays in this museum range from incredible to useless to decaying and broken. It's almost pitch black in there and kind of maze-like, and once you're in you'll be caught in a world of weird you never saw coming from the outside. My favorite is the room dedicated to the canines of the Russian space progam, complete with a painted portrait of each pooch. Everything in here is bizarre, though not everything is completely baffling or incredible in the Ripley's tradition. This is more of an experience, where you have to wonder why these things are even in a glass case to begin with. Half of it is unlabeled or broken, and I still don't know if that's intentional or the result of minimal upkeep. An enigma at the very least, and one you might want to try bending your mind around on a rainy day.
Pros: If you like weird, you'll love this place
Cons: Don't come looking for a typical museum experience. Expect creepy and unexplained.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! If you are looking for an unusual, surprising and charming afternoon's entertainment, than this is just the spot for you. One part Joseph Cornell, one part alchemist's laboratory, the atmosphere inside this storefront museum is utterly unique and hypnotic. It's very dark, uncrowded and gothic, and you feel like you're anywhere but LA while perusing the "exhibits". Many of them are interactive (3D glasses, microscopes, etc. are required for viewing the dioramas and miniature artworks), which only increases the centuries-old vibe.
If you are looking for a mini Smithsonian, The Museum of Jurassic Technology is not for you.
Pros: Inexpensive, Unique, Not Crowded

The Jurassic Museum offers eccentric exhibits that speak to the nature of the human desire to collect and catalogue objects of the world. I particularly like the dioramas of trailers and mobile homes that are inspired by the idea of Noah's Ark. Come to the museum with an open mind and leave any expectations you usually have for other museums at the door. This place is an LA treasure.

I visited this museum on a whim with a friend who had heard it was funny and weird. Weird would be an understatement when describing this place. There were exhibits involving trailer parks, psychiatry, good luck charms, and insects...all displayed in a manner I can only describe as freakishly fantastic.
This probably isn't the place to bring your out of town friends on their first visit, but on their third or fourth time out, when you've exhausted all of the typical LA tourist options, give the Museum of Jurassic Technology a try.

Wow, this museum is like no other. Walking in from the strange little doorway on Venice Boulevard is like going from the black and white, everyday world of Kansas into the full-color Land of Oz--only you've ended up on the absurd dark side. It is a total mind trip of exhibits that treat the bizarre with such utter respect that you'll lose yourself in the hilarious absurdity. The more you try to understand what you are seeing, the more confused you'll be. The beauty is, that's the point!!! The best part of my trip was that there were two students there who had randomly chosen to review this museum for a school writing assignment. Watching the horror on their faces as the realized they had no idea where to begin was priceless. If you're up for a little alternative entertainment, The Museum of Jurassic Technology is definitely a must!

This place is so unique words don't really do it justice. The concept of museum is played with here and the whole space is a kind of huge art project. The exhibits are delightful and unusual really unlike anything else. The space is not that large bbut there is a lot to see and take in so budget a few hours to make sure you get to see everything. I can't really recommend this high enough it is a real treat to have such a space in Los Angeles.

I love this museum! It's the opposite of anything else you'll find out there! This museum is not caught up in the mainstream art sponserships, overpriced giftshops, pristine atmosphere attitude of many other museums. As soon as you walk up to the front door, you ring a doorbell and are buzzed into the establishment. You're not sure if you're walking into private pawn shop or an eccletic antique dealer. As soon as you step in, you're greeted by a volunteer host and invited to sign the guest list. Donations are accepted and no cover charge is required. The museum is dark and you're waiting to see what's next around each corner. All the while, you're wondering...Is this for real???? There's a ample amount of exhibits to see and experience here. I totally recommend going upstairs to the Tea Room to have some biscuits and tea (for free!). The theatre is usually playing an odd film of some sort that you're constantly trying to interpret. I give this place two thumbs up and encourage you to walk off of

Many museum visitors will be vexed and frustrated by the Museum of Jurassic Technology. That is a large part of its curator's intentions. This is not a museum of odd things, rather, the museum itself is the odd thing. If it connects, you will love it and never forget it. The MJT is my own all time favorite museum. But I don't recommend it to those who prefer to have everything clearly explained.
Pros: Uniqueness, Creativity, Humor
Cons: Obscure
