I recently moved away from Orange County to Alabama, and I have to say I can't get Mexican food like this where I am now! I miss El Matador! It was a great place for me to take my kids. Sometimes would get crowded, but we would go early and never a problem getting a table. Food was consistently good! When I get back to visit the OC, I'll for sure be visiting El Matador.
Pros: delicious, great atmosphere for familys

I had been here once before with a friend and it was ok, but nothing special. I stopped in again with another friend and this time it was horrible- the service was bad, the food was bad, and the quantities were poor. They charge $9.50 for a "Guacamole Salad" which is nothing more than iceberg lettuce with a scoop of guacamole on top, and the drinks were sub-par and small as well. I definitely will not be going back here again- there are an abundance of much better mexican restaurants in the OC.

Pros: Nice location and the inside is kind of kitchy cool
Cons: Parking, price of food, quality of food

This is a great hole in the wall place. The food is authentically Mexican. It has been renovated and expanded in the last couple of years. It still has that family owned feel.

I got a nasty case of food poisoning here. I ordered the Mexican pizza and ended up sick all night and had to go to the doctor. I called the health department and the restaurant was investigated. The refrigeration was deemed not cold enough. They had to fix the problem. It is most likely fine now, but the memory will last my lifetime.

I can't tell you how many times I passed El Matador restaurant before actually seeing it. The outside is small and quaint, to say the least. The inside of the restaurant feels very huge, especially when compared with the outside. They had great salsa and fantastic cheese enchiladas. I went with a group of five friends and we all had a great time. Not the fanciest restaurant in Orange County by any means but the food is good and the price is right!
Pros: Good food, fast service, great prices
Cons: Interior and exterior decor leaves a bit to be desired

You can never go wrong with El Matador for mexican food in Newport Beach. Occasionally, you have the wait for a table but they just opened a new bar area so grab a margarita and some chips to hold you over -- this place is definately worth the wait.
Pros: Good for groups - Great chips and salsa
