When you go to the Iowa River and Power restaurant for a meal it is a dining 'experience'. Located at the corner of 1st Ave. and 5th St. in Coralville, this location has a previous history as a flour mill. http://www.powercompanyrestaurant.com/
You expect something special at IRP as it is affectionately known in the area and that something special is ambiance, good food and good service. You can choose from a menu for varied tastes. The items are however pricey and might spoil some peoples appetites for the food to come. It's a good idea to check menu prices before going to eat. A phone call or a stop during off hours will take care of this.
One of the highlights of dining at IRP is the river view. You can sit inside at a table overlooking the Iowa River and if you are lucky see bald eagles nesting in the trees along the riverbank or soaring overhead. You might want to sit outside on the patio when the weather permits. If river views aren't your thing then ask for a table on an inner wall. The servers are always accomodating.
While this is a popular destination for lunches and dinners, Iowa River and Power also serves a great Sunday brunch from 11 AM - 2 PM.
For a true dining experience go to Iowa River and Power.

My birthday was recently and so a friend of mine offered to take me out for a "birthday lunch." We decided to meet at Applebees. Coralville's Applebees is located on the "Coralville strip" on the intersection of Highway 6 and 12th Street.
I had a terrific meal! Applebees had a slightly different menu today since the last time I was there (it's been a few months.) They are now featuring a few selections from Chef Tyler Florence whose cooking show has been featured on the "Food Network." http://www.applebees.com/default.aspx
Although those selections looked good, I ended up chosing a new sandwich called a "Bistro Sirloin Sandwich." This sandwich had sirloin, grilled red onions, and garlic asiago cheese sauce served on a ciabatta roll. In addition, extra asiago cheese sauce came with an order of fries. This sauce was delicious!
We topped our meal off with a "Blue Ribbon Brownie." Delicious! Two brownies, two scoops of vanilla ice cream, and hot fudge. Perfect for sharing! For other meal selections, check out Applebees menu at http://www.rosegroupdining.com/Applebees/menu.asp . Take your family to this restaurant! I think you'll enjoy it!

My wife and I had a date night the day before my birthday. A local church was offering free childcare, so we left them off and we proceeded to run a few errands then went to Bennigan's to use the BOGO certificate I got for my birthday from their Bennigan's Club. I ordered the FIRE-GRILLED 8 OZ. SIRLOIN - A tender cut of choice sirloin grilled to perfection. Served with loaded baked potato and broccoli. My wife ordered the SOUTHWEST FAJITAS - Flame-grilled chicken and/or marinated steak served over sauteed onions and bell peppers with black beans, seasoned rice, flour tortillas, sour cream, guacamole, Colby cheese and pico de gallo.
Our waitress, Whitney, was great. She took good care of us during our visit, making sure our drinks were filled and checking that everything was OK.
As I suspected, my wife told our server we were there for my birthday. So they proceeded to parade out of the kitchen with a BROWNIE BOTTOM PIE - A chewy chocolate fudge brownie with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, covered with hot fudge and crowned with a puffy cloud of whipped cream and a cherry.
But they didn't finish the delivery of my dessert before they sang Bennigan's birthday song for all to hear. Was I embarrassed? Mildly. Did I finish off the dessert? Duh? But not without sharing it with my wife of course.
We were able to pay for the meal with a gift card we had previously purchased. So, in a way, the meal didn't cost us anything.

This use to be one of our favorite places to eat, but the last few times we have gone there, the service and the quality of food has been disappointing. It seemed to take forever for the food to arrive, and when it did, it wasn't as good as the quality I have know from Chilis. My kids won't even touch their chicken strips, which is one of the few things they eat. We won't be eating here for a while.

Gus's is a little out of the general area of restaurants but it is a nice place to go for lunch. Located just off Highway 965 about a mile north of I-80 they offer a menu of sandwiches and salads and typical bar food. There always seems to be a good crowd around lunch time, but plenty of room to sit down. I particularly like their wraps. The chicken wrap with the tomato basil tortilla for the wrap is my favorite.
I think their prices are in line with other establishments of this type. Parking is never a problem. I have not been there in the evening but know they have special events and music some evenings.
When I'm wanting to eat somewhere a little out of the way I like Gus's.
