Wow, I can't say enough about this little yarn shop. More yarn than you would ever imagine seeing in one place! It's definitely the best place to find yarn in Columbus. Be careful and take it slowly, as it might seem a little overwhelming at first. The shop is excellent about giving you ideas. They have examples all over the shop of what you can do with each type of yarn. The staff is excellent, as well.

I have always found a great selection of craft items, scrapbooking supplies, etc. at this Michaels, but I'm switching to JoAnns from now on.
A cashier yelled at my son, SCREAMED at him to stop playing with the doors when he was trying to help his little sister out to the car. She saw an unattended vulnerable kid, and took her frustration out on him. Holding your sister's hand as you leave the store is NOT playing. He was a little behind me because his sister dawdles.
I'm the first one in line to discipline my kids when they misbehave, but I was watching him through the glass, and he was very respectful and responsible. He paused to explain what he was doing, and she screamed at him again, calling him stupid.
I read her the riot act, complained to the management and will not go back.

Paul Robinett in the Short North is a really cool boutique specializing in aromatherapy candles, incense and scents for the home and bath. Many aromas to choose from. I find it very relaxing just to go into the store - all the smells overwhelm you when you walk in... but in a good way. If I were rich, I would buy them all! Anything with oatmeal or lavender is my favorite - but there are smells to tantilize any personality. The shopkeep is very knowledgeable about aromatherapy and is very willing to help you find relaxing scent suitable for you. Makes a great gift for a partner as well.

This is a great quilt shop. It is in a house with rooms and rooms of fabric and many sample quilts. They also have lots of patterns and supplemental quilt supplies. Parking is the rear and the service is good. Many skilled quilters are there to help you.

Blicks is not geared toward the kids or casual hobbyists, but they have gorgeous paper, paints, easels, forms, wonderful books, and enough origami supplies to make you cry. I love browsing here, the staff doesn't follow you around and bug you, they answer questions, and they clearly use some of what they sell.
This place is a little pricey, but the goods are quality. You can buy an easel here that your grandchildren can inherit and use.

When you move into a relatively small town, you find yourself walking into places you might normally pass by. One Saturday morning, my daughter and I were out getting some donuts, when I decided we should stop into Royal Crafts and Collectibles. They have a lot of neat woodwork items out front- benches, chairs, etc. All hand painted, with neat designs cut out. Their business spills out the front door, to pull you in.
This is one of those types of stores where people have (I assume) rented space to sell their wares. Each little section is personally designed with various themes- Buckey gear, vintage kitchenware, hand-sewn dolls & animals, and so on. The furniture that most of the items are sitting on, are also for sale. Some of the furniture looks very dated (but typically well preserved), and then some are from the 50's and 70's.
If you're in the market for some cute vintage collectibles, it's a neat place to check out. You probably want to have some money on hand, though. A lot of the stuff is pricey- perhaps to make up for the rent the store owner charges for each station? I have no idea. Some items are decently priced, though. In any case, if you have time to kill and love looking at unique items, this is a great place.

This store is in a sketchy-ish area near morse rd & cleveland ave, and the owner keeps the door locked (good idea!!) with a sign that says "knock for yarn". I guess if you look sketchy she doesn't let you in!! The owner is an older lady who often has another older lady as a companion with her. The store is small and filled with unlabeled skeins of red heart yarn. She has a lot of baby yarn and regular worsted weight acrylic yarn. There are also pattern books and other supplies for doll-making and macrame. The patterns are regular retail price and the yarn is 30 cents an ounce which can be a really good deal. However, there are no labels so you can't double check dye lots and there's no guarantee that she'll have the same thing if you don't buy enough the first time. She also has a bargain area where you can buy garbage bags full of yarn for 15 cents an ounce.

Having gone to an art high school, I had many freinds who were "artists." For christmas and birthday presents I would always try to get them art supply stuff to help fuel and fun their creativity - and its expensive too. I would always go to Utrecht in the Short North to buy their art supplies. This store has a really fantastic selection of everything an artist could ever want - Picasso would have been in heaven! The prices are competative and the staff knowledgeable. I would recommend any artist - novice or master - to check out Utrecht for their art supply needs.

Claire's is THE place for cheap jewelry and I'm not just talking about the prices. Yes, this place is a depot for fun costume pieces. You'll find a huge selection of earrings and necklaces and also some bracelets, rings and body jewelry. There always seems to be some promotion going on, usually something like buy 2 get 1 free. I've purchased cute hoop earrings in all different sizes here. I usually end up losing one or both earrings so I don't feel so bad when I've purchased them at the low Claire's price. Prices are around $5 for earrings so you obviously can't expect very high quality. Still, they always have lots of fun and funky pieces. For Halloween they have spider/web or pumpkin earrings and even some costume accessories (like devil horns, tail & pitchfork).
They also pierce ears here. My mom had it done there a few years ago and was very pleased...I believe it was free with the purchase of a pair of earrings from a predetermined selection.

I'll admit, when walking into a Yankee Candle store at the mall, I get a little nauseous. All the different, very strong, smells can be overpowering and after smelling a few candles, everything starts to blend together. However, with so many varieties of scents and products, you're bound to find one you love. They carry candles, of course, but also air fresheners (including very long lasting car fresheners), potpourri, candle holders, wax tarts, and custom party favors. Now, they're not cheap, mind you (a small jar candle costs around $10) but their candles will fill up the room with your favorite fragrance (even when they're not lit) and last for quite a long time. My favorites for fall are Pumpkin Pie and Spiced Pumpkin. They smell delicious but beware...they may make your stomach grumble.
