Michael Garman is a local artist who does unique sculptures of 1940's-era working class folks. His lifelike subjects have the most amazing facial features and his work is truly one-of-a-kind. Of particular interest are his "diner scenes" which show all kinds of motley folks hanging out at the local food counter.
But, what you must check out while you are the gallery is the Magic Town int he back. for a small fee, you will enter a world unlike any that you have seen. It is a complete miniature 1940's cityscape with talking holograms and all kinds of surprises. Kids and adult will enjoy--I think it brings out the voyeur in all of us as we peek in windows to get a better look at what lies within.

Up you go, winding around and around. Just don't look down if you are afraid of heights! This winding, part dirt, part paved road will take you from the base of Pike's Peak all the way up to its 14,000 summit. You won't see better views anywhere. Be prepared for a temperature drop when you arrive at the top. I was there in a snowstorm last July. The views from the top are jaw-dropping, and well worth the trip. Make sure you have enough gas in your tank, for their is no place to stop and fuel up along the route.
At the top is a gift shop complete with the prerequisite sweatshirts and tee shirts and a surprisingly good cafe. get a cup of hot chocolate for the walk outside. On the way down, prepare to stop and have your brakes checked by the crew there. They will do a quick check and tell you if your car is safe to make the rest of the trip down the mountain. (as an alternative to driving, you can also take the railway up--or HIKE)

This is a recreated, indoor ghost town that you kids will love and you might even enjoy yourself. At the very least, it's a great rainy day option when the kids are climbing the walls. There are recreated shops including a general store, jail, blacksmith, post office and saloon. Many of the exhibits are hands-on and touching is encouraged.
Yes, it's commercialism at its best (or worst) but let;s face it--the kids love that kind of thing, that's what makes it so popular. And if they can gain some historical insights while you are popping a quarter here and there for this or that, then so much the better!
