If you are into foreign or independent film, this is definitely the place to be. They do show 1-2 mainstream movies as well, and those tend to be really good picks. In fact, as far back as I can remember, majority of the movies shown in Esquire received or were nominated for Oscar. The theatre is pretty old, so don't count on cup holders or auditorium seating. However tickets are cheaper and location is great - Clifton's gaslight district.

Mariemont is similar to Esquire in that it shows foreign and independent films. Located in the heart of Mariemont it's a great place to visit for dinner and a movie. The restaurant next door (The Quarter) is wonderful although a little pricey. On the other side of the theatre is Greaters. Ticket prices are lower than what AMC or Showcase would charge.

Have a drink while watching a movie - perfect combination. The menu is simple but has enough choices to satisfy anyone: sandwiches, appetizers, pizzas and of course beer and wine. There are about 2-3 movies showing in the evenings and weekend mornings, there are only 2 theatres. Definitely get there early, the booths go quickly.

Cincinnati is one of biggest arts and culture cities outside of New York and the like! Broadway shows are always coming through, and majority of the productions have been fantastic! No less than on Broadway in NYC! The venue at Aronoff Center is great, and shows are always well done. I don't particularly care for the canned music that they use most of the time, but the productions are still very good. Les Miserable is probably one of the best off-Broadway shows I have seen in Cincinnati, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the most recent. Although I loved the music for Joseph this production did not seem as top-notch to me. Amy Adams as the Narrator was wonderful, but in my opinion Patrick Cassidy as Joseph left much to be desired.

Looking for a place to view that critically acclaimed, but not mainstream film? Go to the Esquire. If your tastes run for indie or foreign films you will find screenings at the Esquire. The theater is older, but in surprisingly good shape. Enjoy the ambiance, viewing at the Esquire is an experience. Great asset for Cincinnati

More
Every year Aronoff presents at least a couple of Broadway shows. In the last couple of years the selection has been great including Cats, Miss Saighon and Chicago. The only problem is that you have to catch them during the season, tickets go fast since there are way more takers than scheduled performances. Check them online at ticketmaster to get ahead of the crowd.

Not that I get to the movies much anymore, but when I do, I still don't like to pay top price for a movie - that's why I like this place. The food is just as pricey though. When I went it seemed a lot better than other "cheap" movie theaters I have been to, so I was pleased.

Looking for a relatively inexpensive night out with the family? Then head over to Madison Avenue and hit the Oakley Drive-In. Although the box office has been taken over by Showcase Cinemas, I think they are still independent – (I think this because they don’t honor any Showcase vouchers or gift certificates). The box office prices have steadily increased, but since it is a drive-in you can bring your own food and beverages with you, which with my family usually costs more than admission. Make sure you have a good car battery however, since you no longer put the speaker in the window, you just tune to 90.1 on your FM dial. This definitely improves the experience as you no longer are listening to a movie through a small mono speaker and you could even bring you boom box along if you want. The double feature (which usually contains at least one ‘family friendly’ first run feature) starts at dusk, and then they repeat the movies – at least the first movie – I think both but I’ve never stayed that late.
Call (513) 271-4600 for movies on the screen and times
Prices $6.75 for adults - $2.75 for kids 5 to 11

Ensemble Theatre has been located in Over the Rhine for the past 20 years. This playhouse has consistently good seasons and definitely a value compared to other local companies. With the addition of the Kroger Garage, you once again have convenient parking. Theatre always has staff after the performance to make sure you safely are returned to your car.

This theater is a bit small but it is nice. Its conviently located behind Tgi fridays and infront of northgate mall on colerain ave. Their is lots of parking and the theater and bathrooms are always clean. It don't have all the bells and whistles like some of the new theaters but you just can't beat the location. It so nice to wall around the mall befor seeing a movie and then afterward going to the food court for some snacks.
