This gem of a play is now showing at the Greenhouse Theater on North Lincoln. Presented by Teatro Vista, it is written by Tanya Saracho and directed by Sandra Marquez.
The scene is the Fullerton Avenue underpass at the Kennedy. No place for an appearance of the Blessed Virgin could be more ?Chicago?. She is also appearing, at Teatro Vista, to the minds and souls of many Chicagoans who come to this underpass, seeking refuge from their pain and loneliness.
The acting is ferociously real, to the point that it seems that in the quiet of a confession, you hear intimations of homosexuality by a yuppie who claims he hates "those people". You witness the anger of a young Polish health worker, dressed in ?scrubs?, who trails along with her devout mother to pray before the Virgin?s image, all the while seething with rage against the ?Americans? who denigrate and mistreat their Polish workers, ignoring that they are all ?white?. Nonetheless, after railing against these ?Americans who have no faith, no sensibility, no nothing?? she announces that she will pray for them, ?for God to give them something!?
This play has elements of a Greek chorus, with intonations on the course of events and a warning that Mayor Daley will ?take it down at any moment?. Its portrayal of the sublime, inextricably intertwined with the humble and the profane, brings to mind the great classics of baroque era Spanish literature. With traffic and city sounds in the background, we are led to witness the interplay of faith and tradition with both the petty and the noble in human nature. We are invited to meditate in front of the austere set while, in a babel of English, Spanish and Polish, we hear the pervasive loneliness, the compassion and, ultimately, the depth in these human beings, all brought forth in the presence of an enigmatic image on a concrete wall.
The acting is professional. You will laugh as you try to hide a tear. The message will strike a chord in the depth of your being.
Pros: Thought-provoking, sophisticated, timely, funny
Cons: Some foreign language use. Street parking is a challenge.

This school has a preschool elementary in it. My husband and I looked into it for our son a couple of months ago. The lady we spoke to here was very friendly and showed us their classrooms. The rooms looked pretty good and well stocked with things for young children to learn and play with. We got to meet with a teacher as well and she seemed very friendly and passionate about her work. Overall, it seems like a wonderful option that my husband and I are defintely thinking about going with.

This great nonprofit organization has been around for over 30 years. Beginning in a small church on the U of C's campus, it was one of the first to sponsor free breakfasts for poor youths. Now at it's new digs on Woodlawn, it offers literacy and GED classes to adults who want to improve their reading and earn their GED. With day and evening classes, plus one-on-one tutoring, it's easy to accommodate any schedule. The Family Learning Class is especially great, with parents and children learning together. Also offers job interview training. A great way to change your life, either as an adult learner or a volunteer.

This is a wonderful private school in the Lincoln Park area. My sister's kids have been attending this school since the first grade and they love it. This school has an awesome cirriculum and they take great care to make sure that each student follows it and reaches their full potential. The teachers here are also top notch and they get really involved and give their all to teaching these children. What is even better is that the parents of students at this school are really involved with after school programs so it makes for a wonderful environment that puts kids in a safe and educational environment not only during school hours, but afterwards too.

Great Italian place! They have a variety of olive oils, cheeses, and wines. The pizza's are great! Fresh cheeses, freshly made sauces, and never presented to you burned. It's cozy, great Italian decor. The crowd is pretty much in the middle age age group, but if you really like the foods go here. I realized that they didn't have many pasta dishes but they did have many dishes period, to choose from.

My fav new restaurant is Veggie Bites on the southside! They are 100% Vegan and their food is amazing!
Even if you are not vegan, you will enjoy their food. Not too mention that everything is 100% organic and cholesterol free.
They also have goodies for the kids like BBQ nuggets and a large selection of cakes (German Chocolate is my fav) and pies (I hear the Lemon Meringue is to die for).
They have an indoor dining area and a nice outdoor patio in the back too.
But best of all are the two owners and the people who work there. They are very welcoming and very nice.
Veggie Bites is in the Mount Greenwood area at:

I must say, this review probably will be biased due to the establishment's special place in my heart. I don't know what it is that got me about the smoky Gyros shop, but I found myself going there more and more. And not even for the gyros -- they weren't /that/ great.
What I saw in The Burnham was a great sort of working-class vibe. The dining area, I'm guessing, is furnished by the former furniture of the Chicago Hilton & Towers. They're scattered around a big TV. Occupying these tables is a great, unassuming crowd -- many just nurse a beer and smoke. You can buy a tallboy from the case and drink it down in one of the chillest places in the South Loop.
It's a bar, deli, and convenience store rolled into one. Huge selection of candy. Good food -- I call it a Gyros shop, but I think I eat the Spinach Pie more. And they make the most wonderful breakfast -- in the morning, just ask for a Breakfast Bagel with ham. Incredible.
A Columbia student's second home. Support the funky Greek owners with all you've got, and take in the madcap crowd.

One of the newer pubs on the block is Kuma's Corner in the Logan Square neighborhood. I think it's probably about a year old, but I finally got around to visiting it recently. The food is outstanding! Their eclectic appetizer menu includes bacon wrapped scallops (huge scallops!) that were very good. A grilled chicken sandwich is definitely not boring with their lemon marinade. The sandwich is served with fries or chips or you can substitute a salad for extra money. I chose the fries and they were delicious! Another interesting entrée is their macaroni and cheese which is made with several kinds of cheese and you pick two items out of a list to mix in with the mac 'n cheese. It's a huge serving (our waitress said she'd never seen anyone finish it) so you'll have leftovers for future enjoyment! Kuma's is also known for it's good selection of beer in bottles and on tap.
I definitely recommend this place!

They really make you feel at home and at ease at this salon! Its right across from the Merchandise mart so its easily accessible by trains. The staff is really nice, they talk to you and make conversation but its not awkward like usual at salons! They offer you tea and coffee and candy and they've got a ton of magazines! Oh yea, did I mention they are awesome at doing hair? You can just tell them to go with what they feel and they always produce something great!
