Village Cycle Center is huge -- I have not be able to find a bigger bike store in Chicago (although, they advertise that they are the largest bike store in the nation). When I first wanted a bike, I did a lot of price comparisons and visited many stores, and found Village to be the most helpful and had decent pricing. You can find cheaper bikes, you're not likely to find the same level of service.

These guys have the best service - you break your chain, they fix it in 5 minutes $20. Broken pedal, they fix it in less than 5 minutes. These guys are quick and guarantee their work. Theis selection of new bikes is vast, you will be satisfied... and best of all, they will let you test-ride every damn bike in the place if you want before you make a decision to buy (all price ranges from $199-$5k).
Pros: They know what they are talking about
Cons: Space could be twice as big

Moosejaw is a mountaineering/outdoor store that carries a lot of name brand merchandise, as well as their own brand. They have a shop in Chicago and four more in Michigan, as well as a wonderful Website (www.moosejaw.com). This store is absolutely fantastic: it?s big and bright and filled with folks who love the outdoors. The staff is incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and funny. Clearly, they enjoy their jobs. Whatever outdoor sport you?re into, there?s an expert at Moosejaw who?s into it, too, and is dying to talk to you. Their prices are average on the big brands, but their clearance sales are can?t-miss events. They?ll special order anything you ask for and do so cheerfully. Great shop filled with great folks.

I decided for my nephews birthday to get him something other than computer games or games for his x-box. I thought a cool kite would be something that would get him outdoors but be heaps of fun. I searched for a good kite store and found this one located in Oak Park. I was not disappointed when I went into the store. The range of their kites is unbelievable with everything for either a beginner or an expert kite flyer. I got him one of their stunt kites in the shape of a fighter jet in the US Flag colors and he loves it. It does all the tricks but is easy enough as he is a beginner. The other products in their store are fun to look at and I almost purchased some for me. Their prices are somewhat reasonable, but their higher end kites are pretty expensive and really are only for adult kite flyers.
PROS: AWESOME KITES AND PRODUCTS
CONS: A LITTLE PRICEY

Rapid has a wide selection of practical gear for biking in the city. Bad weather gear. Waterproof Gear. Good tires for crappy weather. Good tires for crappy roads. They also have a wide breath of knowledge regarding city biking. Good advice for bike fit. Good ideas for appropriate accessories, (ie; the right stuff for who you are and how you ride.) And it's a friendly community. The mechs and sales folk remember your name, remember your bike, remember what you do for a living. Like any community, it can seem exclusive from the outside. Visit rapid on a weekday, or in the winter, have a conversation about why you love your bicycle, and why you love riding it in chicago. Welcome home.
Pros: Selection, Knowledgable Staff

Every time I've brought my bike in, the staff did an excellent job. Their customer service is simply top notch. Always super polite, and their turnaround time has always been very reasonable. Once I had them do a custom install of an Xtracycle, and they did a very professional job, even consulting with the manufacturer to make sure everything was on the level.

This is hands down the best place to get running shoes. I don't like to shop anywhere else because their shoes are the best. They actually custom make the shoes so that they fit you better than anything else you can find. The people here actually let you run around in their shoes so they can figure out your needs and you can be comfortable with the shoes and the fit. The only thing that makes this place not a everyday shop for me is that it is expensive! But the product you get is definitely worth the money spent.

I love Uncle Dan's. I always seem to find something, even if I'm not looking for anything. The sales staff are amazing; if they don't have an answer, they know the person in the store who does.
They offer a good selection of hiking packs, day packs, shoes, apparel, camping gear and much more. Prices are what they are at similar places, but the sale prices can be very good.
