Village Cycle Center is huge -- I have not be able to find a bigger bike store in Chicago (although, they advertise that they are the largest bike store in the nation). When I first wanted a bike, I did a lot of price comparisons and visited many stores, and found Village to be the most helpful and had decent pricing. You can find cheaper bikes, you're not likely to find the same level of service.

I replaced my 20 year old Trek road bike last fall, working off of the year end sales sheets. Working with my somewhat limited budget, Bill S. took the time to fit me to several bikes on the floor . He took the time to analyize my riding requirements and helped me choose the right bike. (07' Trek 1500) I then loaded up pedals, shoes and aero bars. All of this came in under the retail price of the bike!
This took about 2 1/2 hours start to finish (bike, shoes, pedals, etc.). After a burger next door while they assembled my bike, Bill spent 20 more minutes fitting me and my aerobars to my bike.
I wasn't rushed nor pressured. I drove in from the suburbs specifically because of their inventory list.
Spring's arrival has finally provided more riding time. The bike is great, the buying experience was genuine, and I didn't burn up too many wife points by buying on sale!
Pros: Great selection: Year end sales inventory on line

This is hands down the best place to get running shoes. I don't like to shop anywhere else because their shoes are the best. They actually custom make the shoes so that they fit you better than anything else you can find. The people here actually let you run around in their shoes so they can figure out your needs and you can be comfortable with the shoes and the fit. The only thing that makes this place not a everyday shop for me is that it is expensive! But the product you get is definitely worth the money spent.

Bought my Project One 5900 at OTR a few years ago. Last time in, I was astonished to find they added an entire storefront to serve road and tri clients. The guys tell me it will allow them to carry a deeper inventory.
This has always been one of the best shops in any city, and it's great to see them grow. Jose is a master mechanic and the guys are super helpful. I've been going there for years and would not consider another shop.
Pros: service, bigger inventory, easy attitudes

So often I've found that when I went into a bike shop with serious bike people, I was treated like an alien life form that deserved to be shunned. But I went into Rapid Transit for the first time recently, and found them to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable. These are guys with a mission to convert polluting drivers to healthful bikers, and their friendly attitude and useful advice was quite welcome to this casual rider. That gives them my business! I will certainly choose them first the next time I need gear or repairs.
Pros: Good location, Free air, Smart staff
Cons: No parking., So ride your bike!

This is a great place for runners to go. They know about running and they love it. They have a Tuesday night chick run that is great as well as several other running events during the week. In addition, they love running. They do a running analysis to fit you to the perfect shoe - they don't mind having you try on several before you find the right pair. You don't get to shop by style and color and they have a sign that says so - so don't even try. They are very helpful for those getting into the sport, those stepping it up a notch and those exprets. They have everything you need!

The people who work at Uptown Bikes are about the most pleasant in any bike shop I've ever been to. They work fast, accurately, a charge what I perceive to be a fair price.
Pros: They do it right, charge a fair price and are very friendly
Cons: not always open--call ahead first

I love Uncle Dan's. I always seem to find something, even if I'm not looking for anything. The sales staff are amazing; if they don't have an answer, they know the person in the store who does.
They offer a good selection of hiking packs, day packs, shoes, apparel, camping gear and much more. Prices are what they are at similar places, but the sale prices can be very good.
