Almost walked right by this place with my husband, because of the lower level location(which makes it feel very intimate) Thank goodness we stopped in. The best food in the city when it comes to their tapas type of menu!!! And their service was outstanding. Will be making many more visits. It is a MUST!!!

I decided to give Amphora Mediterranean Cusine in Rogers Park another shot last week and boy was I glad I did. As we walked in we were greeted promptly and saw this place buzzing with activity. Something has changed I thought. As we sat down we noticed the servers were all smiling and having fun with the customers. Our server arrived a moment later and we started what was a great meal. First we had with grilled octopus and spanikopita. Scrumcious. Next came our salads. Oh, my goodness, fresh is all I can say.
For one main course we had a new item on the menu, the Combination Platter. It has a little taste of everything Greek or Mediterranean. Mousaka, dolmades, leg of lamb and pastitsio I think.
The portions were enough to feed two people. Dessert was just as good. The apple tart with ice cream and caramel was a good ending for the meal.
We then stopped at the bar for a after dinner drink. That is where we met a really cool bartender, Pablo. I think that is his name. He can converse about anything. Fun guy. The only shortfall was the wine list. It was limited in selection, but adequate. I am going back tonight for their $5 house martinis.
Pros: Good Food and Service, Free Parking, Great staff
Cons: Small wine list, Lacked table clothes

I did a fair amount of online research prior to our visit to Chicago and was so happy I decided to give Avec a try. I wanted to eat somewhere hip, but not over the top serious with the food (I'm not into foams and gelees). I also wanted somewhere that offered small plates so my husband and I could share a few. The food was really nice...especially the cheese our server selected to pair with our wine. We also got a duck dish that was so so...it had a cold salad on top of it that just didn't seem to mesh well. All in all, I would recommend Avec to anyone wanting to sample several small dishes and have fabulous wine pairings.
The atmosphere is somewhat raucous (read: noisy), so if you're hoping for a quiet, romantic evening try somewhere else. Avec is ideal for a group of friends...but get there early as tables can be hard to get in this small eatery.

I've never done this before, so bear with me please. We were visiting from out of town and came across bin wine cafe from City Search and thought we'd give it a try. We wanted to get out of the Downtown area and try other neighborhoods in Chicago, bin wine cafe is in Bucktown, which is super easy to get to by train from Downtown. We made a reservation by phone for a Friday night at 7pm, they had a table, which I thought was strange for a prime time on a Friday, but maybe we were just lucky. We're glad we did, the place was packed. The server was terrific, she explained the specials, the menu and the food and wine pairings (they make this easy with a numbered system) She made it sound so good, we wanted to try everything, so we did. We started with cheese, they have a lot, we chose the Globetrotter Cheese Flight, 4 cheese from around the globe, then the Tempura Green Beans, our server suggested, oh my god, they were so good. We figured a salad would be a nice healthy touch so we tried the Spinach Salad, it had cherries and almonds and crispy ham. Then we ordered dinner (yes we were eating a lot) I had the Trout, my husband always orders chicken so naturally he went with the 1/2 Chicken, they were both excellent, my trout was crispy and light and fresh, the chicken was the perfect summer dish served with a green bean salad. Now the wine, they have over 30 by the glass and we had 2 flights each, (four 3oz tastings) thety did not disappoint and the descriptions were fun and informative. It was getting late when we finally left, but we didn't feel rushed at all, in fact the server chatted with us for a long time and was very friendly, offering tips on places to visit while in Chicago, she had a great sense of humor. This is getting long, so I'll finish up with this - Go to Bin Wine Cafe Now!
Pros: service, location, food, wine
Cons: a little loud

One of my great friends from college came up to visit and she was totally in the mood for a good mojito so we walked over to Bravo and experienced there coconut mojito and there raspberry mojito both made by this very upbeat ,funny and warm androgynies bar-tender that was so cool we decided to spend most of our time at the bar upstairs. We then made our way down to there lower level and had a fabulous time with the rest of our party.
Pros: Spanish Bar-Tenders with wonderful mixes
Cons: DJ needs to get with the program of high end music
