If you love Thai food, you must try Thai 55 in Hyde Park. It's simply terrific. I discovered this little gem while having lunch with a friend. I’ve been hooked ever since. My favorite, the Bangkok chicken over fried rice. They also have great smoothies and fantastic appetizers. I especially like their crab Rangoon and egg rolls. Prices are very reasonable and lunch specials start at just $7.

Located near the University of Chicago campus and walking distance to the lakeshore and the Museum of Science and Industry, Thai 55 serves-up a tradational Thai menu in a bohemian setting. Portions are generous, and the curryies bite the platate long after one swallows. The cat fish is tender and the squid excellent. Service can be spotty at lunch, with the staff mainly U-of-C students. The low prices and quaint college neighborhood more than make up for any occasional service shortcomings.

Once of the better Thai restaurants on “Thai Row” in Hyde Park (there are about 4-5 Thai restaurants in a two block span). The food here is full of flavor. The curries are spicy and the Pad Thai is solid. It is a little on the greasy side. I highly recommend the “Original Hot Number 1”. Though it has a stupid name, it is very spicy and full of flavor. The interior is pretty bare and small. The staff is friendly. In fact, during one brutally cold Chicago winter day, the manager took my order for carry out and insisted I have some hot tea before I left. It was so thoughtful and kind, and probably the reason I come here over and over again.
