A small storefront on Halsted, next to 7-11, The Chicago Diner caters to vegetarians and the vegetable-friendly. There is nothing that I have had here that I didn't like. The salads are plentiful, the sandwiches are vegetarian takes on the typical diner food. The servers are cute, little girls, not bright, but friendly and enthusiastic about the food. They are very helpful, and if and when it comes to dietary concerns, the Chicago Diner is more than accommodating. The ingredients are fresh and focused, and the portions are generous. The prices are reasonable, fairly cheap, but it can add up when you have to order a mixed juice or smoothie, and then when you add on a vegan dessert. But it's good food, and it's good for you.

I am not a vegetarian, but I am open-minded. My friend is vegetarian and wanted to go here. I did not like the fake meat (seitan), or really anything on my plate-even things that didn't normally contain meat?! My friend did like it. I liked the idea of it, it was a nice comfortable small place to eat. I won't go back, but if you are a vegetarian or vegan you should try it!

As a vegan, I find it quite hard to find friendly restaurants but The Chicago Diner has topped my high standards. Offering all vegetarian, and MANY vegan options, this place makes vegan eating a hassle free and pleasant experience. Although the food is nothing I couldn't make myself and a bit on the expensive side, I love to bring non-vegans here to experience a quality vegan meal. Great selection of soups, appetizers, sandwiches, full meals, AND DESSERTS! The vegan cakes are worth the extra money, I've never tried vegan cake that tastes SO GOOD! (Even I can't do it the way they do!)
This restaurant has earned its reputation from local residents, suburban visitors, and nationwide admirers. AND, the service is always great, even when the place is packed (which is often).
Vegans: Try their Vegan Nachos, they are to die for!

I love the vibe here and I've been trying to like the food. But I find most of their dishes void of flavor. They make healthy organic vegetarian dishes and I admire that. The setting is cool and the staff is friendly. They even have great outdoor seating when the weather permits. I just wish things were a little more tasty. I will go back again soon and order something new and try harder to love this place.

I recently noticed that the Chicago Diner has ben winning all these awardsVeg News rated them the favorite Veggie place in the country... AOL # 1 in Chicago... Check Please 3 thumbs up from 3 meat eaters. well their popularity is defintely deserved. The place is warm & friendly... or old & funky... depednding on my mood... but the sandwiches such as Philly Steak ( seitan) or the entrees like the Sheperds Pie are huge & very tasty. Peanut Butter smoothie best I ever had... Blueberry Cheesecake wonderful. Prices quite reasonable...
Great soups... salads too.
Wait staff pretty cool.... my friends & I have been coming back at least once a week as the menu has many choices we want to try.

This place has been around a long time, has changed hands and has evolved into a dependable institution.
I remember coming in here when they first opened and being delighted with the food quality. The ingredients were frequently organic, and almost always well prepared.
It had a kind of hippie ambiance then but that has long since gone. Fortunately, they have maintained the quality.
I remember being a little shocked at the business like attitude that replaced the more casual, but hey, that is just the changing times, eh?
As long as they maintain the food quality, I will come back.

Chicago Diner is a vegetarian mainstay in Chicago, but the food is ordinary and needs improvement. The menu has a lot of interesting choices, but each of three times I've been there, I've been disappointed. The vegetarain gyros sandwhish is extremely dry on equally dry and ordinary bread, and the sauce was tasteless. I had to drown it in mustard. Coleslaw was also dry and bland. Ditto on all of the above comments for other sandwhich offerings. Breakfast is slightly better, but again, the food was incredibly underseasoned and undersauced all around. Desserts, however, were excellent. Go if you must, but you'd be better off taking a trip north to the Heartland in Roger's Park or Blind Faith in Evanston if tasty food is what you are seeking.
