Aside from broadcasting a radio show from here, this is the major vegetarian place in the neighborhood.
They’ve been around for years and have a regular contingent of loyal customers. They have outdoor seating in the summer, they have music, they sponsor causes and in the summer they run a stand at the beach.
Friendly atmosphere. If you're an activist - go here. But please, only liberal causes.
Only drawback - no parking, but they're right next to the el and they have bike racks.

Certain places incarnate the flavor and values of a time and particular location. The Heartland Cafe is a unique Chicago institution that is like a rare flower that only grows in one place on earth, Rogers Park, Chicago, IL, USA, planet earth.
The time referred to is the late 60's, early 70s when certainly ideas seemed certain to manifest. They are alive and well here, although their survival is highly questionable elsewhere in Bushville.
You can eat your organic chili here, listen to all kinds of wonderful music, and pick up the latest progressive alternative rag. Be sure to check out the cool art too.
Only in Chicago.

Bohemian eatery in Roger's Park neighborhood, has small adjoining store with "new age" items, natural, organic, and ecco-friendly goods. Orignal artwork decorates walls, but general no-frills decor inside the restaurant. Food is vegetarian-friendly but also has meat-dishes, and including the slightly unusual--like buffalo chili or a macrobiotic plate--as well as familar items like burgers, salads and a variety of sandwhiches. Casual food, you won't find haute cuisine here, fancy sauces or complex dishes, but the large menu offers something for everyone. Comfortable atmosphere. Food is generally very tasty, but a bit hit or miss with a few dishes--some items a little on the bland side.
