They make a lot of dough!
Frequented by many University of Chicago students, as well as other South side locals, for their strong java and pastries, sandwiches and snack items. I found this bakery while visiting the area one day. It's only several blocks away from the Museum of Science and Industry (hey, that can be another review). The food and beverages here are okay and so is their hospitality but come check out the area for their well known architecture.

Yummy food but slow service
Medici is just a few blocks away from the University of Chicago campus and is frequented by students and faculty. The food is really tasty and the best items are the pizza, sandwiches, burgers (try the cajun burger!), and salads (with homemade dressings). They also make an incredible strawberry lemonade and have an outdoor roof patio that is great in the summer. The only downside is the service is always very slow.

Generations of Hyde Park denizens can't be wrong
The "Med" has been a popular hangout for University of Chicago students, and Hyde Park residents, for decades. Certainly, the vast amount of damage that patrons of the Med have done to the wooden tables and chairs over the years attests to that fact. (Kids, if your parents went to the U. of C., maybe they left their initials in one of the tables! go and look!)
The Med serves classic American fare - that is, burgers, pizzas, fries, shakes, and desserts like apple pie. Their milkshakes stand out because they have a pretty high ice cream - to - milk ratio, AND they use premium ice cream and real cream, making them especially thick and yummy. (people with heart problems beware)
Decor in the Med is extremely eclectic. No one has any idea where all the various carved wooden statues and original sketches that are scattered around the place come from.
They also have some pretty big round tables in the ground floor, making it one of the better options in Hyde Park for a group gathering.
