Washington Mutual is not your typical old fashion fancy old school type bank. For good or bad depending on each persons opinion they have taken a more modern approach to banking by doing away with the tellers handling money. They atmosphere is really casual and laid back and they do offer a great free checking account, typically with a bonus to open.

Generally, I like Washington Mutual. The staff tends to be very friendly and helpful, and the online banking option is really nice because it is comprehensive. However, it is a little weird there, because there are NO drive-thrus, even in the suburbs. It's a little inconvenient if you want to do a quick run to the bank, because you have to go inside. Also, I don't like having to go to the little stand where you can actually withdraw your cash. I understand they don't want to handle money, but why can you still ask the teller for rolls of quarters?

I love this bank. I really do. It's right across from work and it's easy to use. The tellers are extremely helpful and solve a lot of your problems. I have the habit of losing my debit card in the ATM (don't ask, I'm kind of stupid) and they're very helpful in retrieving it. I've been interested in switching banks, but really can't because they're so close to work, home and my church.

I have had good experiences physically going to any Washington Mutual location. Usually you don't have to wait too long, the service is friendly, and there's new locations popping up all over the place. I recommend them for free checking and convenient locations.
However, don't expect much out of their online banking, which I somewhat depend on, being too lazy to use a checkbook. For the past several years I've used online banking with no problem, but in the past month or so I keep getting locked out of my account for no reason. I called customer service and they reset my password. I was able to log in one time, then it locked me out again. I called back and the dumb lady on the phone wouldn't give me access to my account. So I called and talked to someone else who reset the password again. Well this time it wouldn't let me log in at all. I know the problem is on their end, but I don't feel like waiting on hold forever just to talk to a handful of idiots again to try and get the problem resolved (and who knows if it'll actually be resolved when I hang up and try to log in).
So, I am going to find a new bank. Sucks, because I liked everything else about this bank, but it kind of helps to have access to your account.
