This has to be one of the best south asian food joints in the country. The food is absolutley delicious. It's a large restaurant so you could easily take a large group there; b/c it's so cheap and the food is served family style (as in most South Asian restaurants), you get an amazing deal. But beware, this place caters to people from South Asia so it's pretty spicy. Also, for some reason there are always kids crying at nearby tables, but the food is worth all that. The menu is very colorful - all the featured items are presented with a picture so if you're not familiar with Pakistani food, you know what you're getting. An added plus are speciality dishes that you won't find in your typical South Asian restuarant (e.g. pasanda kebabs, frontier chicken, nihari). Be adventerous - you won't be disappointed.
Pros: pasanda kebabs!, authentic pakistani, food, prices
Cons: tacky decor (but who, cares!)

Though this was my first experience with Persian or Iranian food, I was quite impressed. I have had Afghani food on a number of occasions and was expecting basically the same thing; I was pleasently suprised to find a great deal more variety, and though many of the dishes were remeniscent of what I had had, the flavour profiles were very different. For those of us not familiar with the cuisine, the service is exceptionally helpful. All of the food was very well prepared and the prices were, importantly, very reasonable, better than at many other Far North ethnic eateries. The only disappointment was with the Persian ice cream. Based on previous experience with Afghani rosewater ice cream, and the quality of the meal to that point, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, it appeared that instead of making the ice cream themselves from scratch, they take rather inferior 'vanilla' and then mix in rosewater and other additions. The result is not so much to improve the original vanilla, but to lend the grainy texture of frozen rosewater crystals. Overall, though, I would highly recommend Masouleh as a great introduction to a cuisine that remains far too foreign in this country.
Pros: Food, Helpful service
Cons: Ice cream, Parking

Of the many hookah/restaurant places I've been to, this is quickly becoming one of my favorites if only because of the late hours, the selection of food, and the amazing entertainment on the weekends. Their weekends start on Thursdays and go through Saturday night and there is a minimum $25 charge per person, done like credit so you can get anything. Their selection in hookah is limited to about 12 flavors but their hookah prices are one of the cheapest in Chicago at $10 per hookah.
The location is not your typical hookah bar with secluded tables covered by hangings. The room is very open with large tables that are close together. On weekends, they dim the lights, have a band, and a belly dancer. On weekdays, they have much brighter lighting and it feels more like a restaurant than a hookah bar. Their food is delicious.
The only real complaint is that I am not impressed with their speed. If you are going here, you will wait awhile to get your hookahs but they are very full and last awhile. Plan on spending a couple hours here if you decide to go. Nice thing is that if you have an issue with the food, hookahs, or anything else, the management is very good about addressing it.
Pros: Good price, good food
Cons: Slow service

The quintessential Middle Eastern dive, if there ever was such a thing finds its way on a quiet row of restaurants near UIC. No one goes to such a place for its service or ambience. It's all about the food for really good prices. Nothing at lunch time went over 9 dollars and most sandwiches were around 2-4 dollars. Falafels were okay..a tad too much on the crunchy/burnt side..but they're exactly what I bargained for.
Pros: prices
