Al's is the kind of place that you need to visit at least once. It's got a real old-school appeal. I can't say that I've had an Italian beef which is head-and-shoulders above this one. It was flavorful and very juicy. Dine-in space is limited here, but in warm weather there are some seats outside. I can't say whether Al's is #1, but it's definitely in the top two or three.

I have been going to Al’s Beef ever since I discovered it as a student at UIC. This Taylor Street institution serves a juicy Italian beef sandwich, which you could make even messier by asking for the entire sandwich to be dipped in beef juices. I also like the beef and sausage combo. The very informal interior has counters for stand-up eating, and now there are a couple of benches outside. The parking lot for customers is handy.
