I have been coming here since a kid with my Pop. It used to be a little bit too "gentlemen with cigars and mistresses" -oriented when I was young, however, that has changed and it is welcoming to everyone now and quite good for family gatherings. The roasted chicken and NY strip are the best dishes, and when my son was with me, they always would just cook him whatever he wanted (usually an alfredo dish). Don't go unless you are HUNGRY since the steaks are giant. If you don't like medium rare you really need to stress that--I like fairly rare steak but as the steaks are thick you have to request a longer cook time if you don't want it pretty pink. Staff here are much more accommodating for kids compared to other 'macho' steak joints. Many happy memories here.
Pros: steak, kind staff
Cons: pretty pricey but can't complain on the steaks

Truly great food, with an atmosphere to match! Our table ate family style and loved each course. We had a homemade pasta that night that was outstanding and cooked perfectly, with such amazing texture. One of my favorite Italian eats (and typically I am not that impressed by Italian). The atmosphere is also cool, although the location off the beaten track. My extremely hard to please foodie mother also thought it was great!
Pros: Parking is easy, ambience, food

While the Berghoff closed for a while to become an catering-only establishment, it's back. Both the food and ambiance are excellent--the decor is quite nice.
Pricing isn't too bad. Furthermore, the bread that you get with the meal is excellent--some of the best restaurant-bread I've had. The root beer (as several other reviewers have pointed out) is also excellent, and definitely worth a try.
Finally, if German food isn't your thing, they also offer a variety of mainstream dining options that may better suit your taste. All in all, I'd have to recommend the Berghoff.

my boyfriend took me here over the holidays. i was surprised by the mixed reviews on the food... we asked the waitress what to order and she must have steered us in the right direction because everything we ate was delicious. great wine list too!
we like to try new restaurants and sometimes (especially when it is a new trendy spot) they can be totally unremarkable, but this place really managed to make an impression.
my only complaint was that the hostess/bar area was totally disorganized. we had a reservation, but didnt sit down until 1/2 after it was scheduled, the hostess asked us 3 times if we were a different party, it took about 20 minutes to get the drinks we ordered and another 20 to find someone to pay.
Pros: food, wine, ambiance
Cons: trendy crowd, disorganized

If you work anywhere in or near River North, the Green Door is a must do for lunch. Whether dining alone at the bar or with a group, Green Door accommodates. I have always been a solo diner, and I sit at the bar. My favorite things there are the quesadillas (made with buffalo sauce inside...mmmm), the burger (it's what they're famous for), the buffalo chicken sandwich, the pizza bread, and my own version of the pizza bread made with avocado and swiss only. The bloody mary's are the best in town (made with a splash of guinness for body).
Barkeeps are polite and friendly. Service is on key. I am definitely a repeat customer.
Pros: Great food. Great service.
Cons: lunch hour isn't long enough.
