A trip to Ghirardelli Chocolates on Michigan Avenue is like taking a step back in time. I visited on a weekday afternoon, when there were maybe three people in the entire shop. It feels like an early 20th century soda fountain, with plenty of dark wood, glass, and marble counters.
You order at a counter, but they'll bring your food to your table. I suggest ordering their signature hot chocolate and people watching for a while. Servers will come around and take care of any other needs you might have, but I've found it's spotty at best. If there's a huge crowd, don't bother. Visit during off-peak times to absorb the atmosphere Ghirardelli works so hard to create.
