Great bar for a low-key night out. Excellent food, Scotch flights, and great beers on tap. I recommend the Young's Double Chocolate or any of the Belhaven drafts. No TVs, so don't expect to watch sports there.

English truly is a late night bar. Come close to 11 or midnight for the best crowd. The 3 levels always offer a great time and differing atmospheres as well. Check it out on a Friday or Saturday night.
Pros: tri-level

We had under 5 minutes to eat our dinner and had to rush to the theater. We told our waiter when we arrived at 6:30pm that we had tickets to see Wicked at 8pm. Our appetizer came promptly, then an HOUR went by and we were getting ready to leave when the waiter appeared with our dinner. In a panic, we had a few bites and bolted out of there. On top of that we were over-charged for our wine, and had to take a cab 4 blocks so we didnt' miss our show. I was very disappointed b/c I had several choices for a pre-theater restaurant. There were 3 couples in the restaurant, so there is no excuse for why our food took so long. The view was nice but I wouldn't go back or recommend this place.

I was keen on this place because I'd read about it in Chicago Magazine a while back. So my boyfriend and I got there around 2:15PM today. We placed our orders and were looking forward to a great meal. While doing so, I started watching the cooks. I noticed one cook, a tall, older guy picking his teeth with his index finger. I stared at him long enough and we made eye contact. He kept going and wasn't the least bit concerned that I'd caught him. I watched him proceed to handle all sorts of dishes and ingredients with his bare hands. He did not stop to wash his hands! I called over the hostess and told her what he'd done. She suggested that someone else would prepare our food. We decided to leave anyway. Of course they had the good sense to charge us for the lemonade we barely drank! Needless to say, we'll NEVER return. With all the viruses going around these days, the last thing anyone needs is to get sick because some cook decided to pick his teeth and then handle food intended for customers.
Pros: None
Cons: Staff put your health at risk!
