Come in and get your tea on! That's their mantra and a great one it is in fact. On a hot and steamy afternoon in Chicago I popped in and discovered a bohemian atmosphere where I could sit back and enjoy my blackberry tea. They also have coffee, snacks and a few select sandiches. Purchase teas and coffees by the pound. Far out!

but I tried a cup of Caramel Machiato from Third World Cafe and thought this is something could drink everyday. Although I still haven't developed a need or want for coffee, I think the Caramel Machiato is the best thing I have had in terms of coffee because it doesn't taste like it.

First, for full disclosure, I should say that I work at the Coffee and Tea Exchange.
That said, it is nonetheless a great place.
First, there's nothing like it in Chicago for quality or price. The coffees are all fresh roasted in Chicago, and mostly $7.39/pound. The tea (I may be a tea snob) is cheap with a selection that gives Argo a run for its money. Spices, too, in bulk, are high-quality and inexpensive.
Also, the owners and manager are making an effort on the fair-trade and organic fronts. They have several kinds of fair-trade organic coffee, and have extraordinary organic teas and spices.
And of course, it's locally family-owned and operated. This is important for a place like this. Maybe it's telling about the quality here, too, that it's managed to survive for over thirty years in lakeview, even with a starbucks, caribou and intelligentsia within three blocks.
Anyway, yes, I work there. But I work there because I think it's a great place.

I live in Missouri and have visited Chinatown in Chicago many times. Ten Ren is a fantastic store to visit. The scents when you walk in, the knowledge of the personnel on the teas they sell, the huge number of teas they offer. There just is no way to truly describe this store to some one who has never been it there. I look forward to my visit there every time I visit Chicago. If someone is just looking for your run of the mill grocery store lipton bag you have a lot to learn and this is the best store around for learning. One person earlier quoted about abrupt phone attitude. I would say this is not normal I have called there many times to order tea and this has never happened to me. As well as the teas they also have oriental tea services to sell as well as many other oriental items. The varieties are unbelievable. They have so many to choose from. ABSOLUTELY BEST IN CLASS !
Pros: Ambience, service, variety
