Starbucks has become a household name now. It is so common it is almost sickening. But there are a few things here that are hard to find anywhere else! The cafe mocha drink here is so good and I have yet to find anyplace else that can make it as good. On a daily basis though, it does get quite expensive. But what can you do? Life has almost become dependent on this huge chain.

This is my favorite Starbucks in Chicago, and the only one in the city that I will even step into. They have their own satellite radio station, something like "Starbucks Radio." The station plays one of the smoothest mixes of music I've ever heard. Only problem is that if you go there for a couple days in a row, you'll begin to hear a pattern of the same songs. Still there's something special about being able to hear Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Spanish Rock and NIck Drake all in the time it takes you to drink a grande half caf low fat soy latte.
This Starbucks is in the heart of the gallery district (River North area).I've heard great things about their free Saturday morning gallery walk. They have great art on the walls, interesting clientèle and a groovy staff that will often sing along with the music. They've got their regulars, and I may be considered one of them because I'm there at least 3 times a week. I usually get there around 6:15 and am able to mellow out a little before work starts.
I give this place 5 stars because of the music. But I must say that they do know how to brew coffee here too. This is not your typical Starbucks, the coffee is pretty good here. And again, they'll serve you in a mug if you ask and give you a free refill if you are nice.

Metropolis is a nice litte coffee shop on Granville. It is near to the train stop, so it attracts a lot of comuters and people on the go.
The coffee drinks here are delicious and always very flavorful. They also have a variety of sandwiches and treats to go with your cup of java.
I love this place in the summer because you can grab one of their outdoor tables and enjoy the view of the bustling neighborhood. It is a pleasant place with friendly service and consistently good food.

One of my all time favorite coffee places, great service and great atmosphere! Try the Berkely blend late in the afternoon its a real pick me up. Also if you're in the mood for a little extra kick ask for a couple of "shots" of espresso.
Pros: Nice quiet and sophisticated
Cons: Location is hidden. You have to know where to find it.

I have studied at this coffee shop many times during my graduate career. They have delicious coffee drinks, a friendly staff, and they are one of the few coffee shops open late! They also have hookahs which I'm a huuuuge fan of.

Ipsento is an extremely original coffee shop for Chicago. The coffee tastes great. The baristas are usually always friendly. It is a small shop but recently expanded to allow more seating. The feel is designed to seem like a living room of a house. It has new owners and reviews seem to say this new approach is what the community wants!
Pros: Great Coffee and Food, Friendly Baristas, Quaint Atmosphere
Cons: Used to be size, but now they have expanded

Feels just like being in Europe, Italy more exact since that is where Lavazza is from. Now there is nothing like real Italian espresso. I have tried several of the specialty coffees they offer and this is not only the best coffees I have had in a long time but the most innovative selection I have come across. The presentation of the beverages are creative - some are served in martini glasses - it is so nice not to have to deal with paper cups (unless in a rush).
They bake really nice muffins, scones and cookies in the cafe' and the ones I have tried have been very good and I am quite picky. They make the salads and sandwiches while you wait and the ones I have tried have been delicious - I am hooked on the fig marmalade, brie and prosciutto sandwich and a salad with smoked salmon. The prices are surprisingly low considering the food is made with quality ingredients - good value while eating healthy and fresh food.
The interior is modern Italian and the walls have cool shots taken by famous photographers. I even got my hands on the 2009 Lavazza calendar - photographed by Annie Leibovitz!
The staff that I have taken my orders and served me at the table has been courteous.
A very welcome edition to the Chicago scene.

This is another strange open mic coffee shop up north. Head here on the weekends and get yourself a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee or maybe just a scoop of ice cream. This place has a much better selection for food and drinks then the other independent local shops around it.
