Dykstra gies you a courtesy call as a reminder. They want to make sure they do an excellent job and will make a survey call later to see if everything met your needs. Early To Bed, up on Sheridan and Foster, a block off the Berwyn red line, is simply amazing. Not only do they carry everything under the sun, but their staff is informed and stockful of suggestions. Their prices are fair and on par with most other places.
But what is truly amazing is the atmosphere. The store sees itself as women-oriented, boy-friendly, and open to all genders and sexual orientation... and they make good on these words. In the store, there are tables and displays of their products out of the packaging that you can feel and turn on, to judge for yourself. The vulgar and flashy packaging most toys are sold in is kept out of sight, to promote a positive and empowering experience. Though its target audience is women, I've never felt out of place there or unwelcome as a guy.
The staff is phenomenal, willing to discuss products with comfort and knowledge. I've also observed them being very sensitive and astute to customer's varying levels of comfort with the topic.
I recommend Early To Bed to anyone and everyone. This store gets it right.

Formerly located at Sheffield just south of Belmont, Pat's Pizza is a northside staple. They have fast delivery, a heavy hand with the pizza toppings, and an extensive list of Italian entrees. While the thin crust is not my favorite (tasts like a flattened pretzel), others I know think very highly of it.
The cheese they use is very good; it holds all the toppings in place but is still gooey/stringy enough to make me happy. I would like to see more sauce on their pizzas, though.
They often have specials, such as ordering a large (or maybe it's a certain $ amount?) will get you a free 6-pack of soda.

Tasty Sub on Howard has all the usual fare, burgers, hotdogs, as well as great subs. Their prices are decent, service is good. The best part about Tasty Sub is they seem to be open all the time. Actually they’re open until about 4am. How many places can say that?
The older kids are walking out the door at 2 am and when I asked where they thought they were going they said - Tasty Sub. I said yeah right. But it was true. This place is open till about 4 in the morning. They MUST catch the bar crowd.

More
I went to Presidential Dental Associates and saw Dr. Erin Cox. This was my first experience with a dentist in Chicago (after moving here from out of state). Presidential Dental came recommended by a friend.
Dr. Cox was fabulous! She was on-time, very nice, and very gentle with my sensitive gums. Scheduling appointments is easy and they take dental insurance. I don't have insurance, but I didn't feel pressured into dental services that I didn't need. She did find a few cavities, but let me know which were important to fill now and which could wait until after I am eligible for insurance.
I highly recommend them!

I'm glad this little shop was listed because when I was describing why I don't care for Krispy Kreme and what kind of donuts I do like this low-key shop came to mind. They are located right across the street from the Brown Line (ravenswood) train's last stop (Lawrence/Kimball). This shop also sells ice cream and coffee but that's about it. It's not all that pretty and they don't sell t-shirts or have supermarket placement but in my opinion sell a great donut.

Sam The Shoe Doctor offers many shoe related services, including repair, shine, and accessories. The shoe shine is always busy during lunch time in the loop. The repair service is good and not too expensive. They also sell lots of items for your shoes, such as do-it-yourself shine kits, laces, cushions, and adhesives you put on the bottom so that your shoes are not so slippery. This no-frill place is a good place to go for your shoe repair needs.

More
This dentist offers convenient times and quick service. The work I've had done is relatively painless. They also seem to accept most insurance plans. I'm not sure what the prices are, however.
I don't like how open the stations are, but it is small space. At least the more technical work (i.e. fillings) are done in a more secluded area.
The last time I went, I had silver fillings replaced (as they had the potential for discoloring my teeth) and Dr. Blank allowed me to wear headphones to cover up the sound of the drill.

Come on, let's show CTA some love! They are not perfect by any means. But when I need to use them once in a while, I am very grateful they are there. When I was in between vehicles a couple years ago, I took CTA all the time. Considering the price of gas and the fact that you could go all the way from the end of Evanston to the South side of Chgo for 2 bucks makes you realize we have one of the best public transit systems in the country. The new fare cards seem to be working out well these days also.
If you don't like waiting too long for buses, call them or get a route schedule; they are usually not off by much. It will help a lot, especially in winter.

Even though I am a fan of Subway I really like quiznos too sometimes. They were the first sub shop I know of that offered the toasted option on their subs and by far they are definately the best at it. I agree that over the years they are getting more limited and the portions get smaller where the prices get bigger it seems. I just usually keep an eye out for their special which typically is a pretty good deal.
