Located inside Navy Pier near the front entrance gives them huge exposure and a great business. As the other two ladies mentioned in their reviews of this bookstore they carry alot of bigsellers, mainstream books and publications as well as smaller less known publications and authors. I am also aware of speakers and events that they sponser around town. A local author has a better chance doing an in-store signing ,lecture or reading here or at another Barbara's Bookstore than they would with some of the bigger bookstore chains.

Barbara's carries all the bestsellers like the big chains do, but they just seem to have a more warm, comfortable environment. The staff is very friendly and they know their books. I like supporting businesses that are not big chains, because I like knowing the money is staying in the community. Barbara's has always had great service, and they often have authors doing in-store readings and signings, which I really like.

Barbara's Bookstore is one of the great independents, and it shows. The staff knows books. The store can be found not just in its brick and mortar locations, but also at events around town. I went to a performance at the Shakespeare Theatre at Navy Pier and Barbara's was there with a table of related books. The store also stocks all the offbeat magazines and literary journals you can't often find in mainstream stores. There's a reason for independents, and Barbara's provides the evidence.
